hey so how do i know i have binge eating? every few days or so, in the middle of the night, i kinda "raid" the kitchen, eating a lot of carbs and fattening stuff -- cookies, cake, bread, the like. i often eat until i'm sick. i always feel bad after it, and try to hide it from people. i'm a skinny guy, however. can this be classified as binge eating? it's not like i binge whenever i'm sad or angered. often, it feels like i eat because i'm bored or because i think, "i'm skinny, fuck it". yet, as i said, i feel guilty after these things. can someone help me out here? thanks guys

I'm no doctor, but that sounds like some sort of eating disorder. It would probably be best to see a counselor about it.
If you're unable to do that, the next best thing is avoid buying pre-made junk food and buy only food that takes some time and effort to prepare, so that it's not so easy to just get up and eat something. If you find yourself physically hungry at night, get some bananas or other kind of fruit to take the edge off.

i eat fairly healthy, and i like eating healthy. yet at these times i feel like i can't control myself. i'm asking because it doesn't seem to fit into the usual binge disorder cases

Do you eat enough during the day? You probably do have some sort of mental connection between food and something.

I eat like a bodybuilder, so I eat between 5-6 meals a day well portioned. But two times a week I allow myself a 'cheat' meal when I can eat whatever I want to help cravings. But I've gotten to the point where even eating a bit to much makes me feel like crap.
Anyways, try eating more spread about throughout the day in little meals. Also eat more complex carbohydrates such as Whole Wheat/Whole Grain, Brown Rice, Sweet Potatoes, ect. Also cut down on the simple Carbs such a Sugar, White breads and White Rice. Andddd make sure to not drink your calories, cut out the Soda and excess sugars when drinking.

Go see a doctor and get an A1C test done as soon as possible. This sounds like undiagnosed diabetes to me. You may not be, but it's better to be sure. My dad exhibited this same behavior - badly craving sweets, often at night, while apparently maintaining a healthy weight.
If you are diagnosed as diabetic, you need to stay active and eat right. If you don't, and you gain weight, you could progress to a level where you need to inject insulin even if you are type 2. Excess insulin use (associated with heavier weights or at least out-of-control type 2 diabetes regardless of weight) makes you fat(ter), exacerbating the problem it's trying to solve.

Are you eating good carbs and avoiding bad ones? It sounds to me like either your leptin levels are dropping extremely low or you are leptin resistant.
The hypothalamus regulates the body's energy, and it measures energy availability by detecting the hormone leptin. When the hypothalamus detects a drop in leptin it slows down your metabolism to conserve energy and triggers hunger.
Leptin levels scale with body fat and carb intake. When a person loses a significant amount of fat in a short period of time, leptin levels drop steeply and rapidly. This causes the hypothalamus to freak right the hell out. "ZOMG I'M STARVING! EAT! EAT! EAT!" The way to counter this is by having regular carb refeeds. A few days a week, you should make sure to eat plenty of good carbs. Fruit, rice, potato. This causes leptin levels to rise, letting your brain know that you're not starving.
The best option is to eat higher carbs on strength training days, if you do strength training (and you should). Strength training releases glycogen from the muscles, and that needs to be replaced, so you're going to need more carbs for that anyway.
The opposite end of the problem is caused by eating too many simple carbs, which results in developing leptin resistance. Fructose and highly processed grain flours cause triglyceride levels to rise, which prevents leptin from crossing the blood-brain barrier. When this happens, you have plenty of leptin but the hypothalamus can't detect it, so your brain thinks the level is very low. Different mechanism, same result.

Hey mate, I have an addictive personality, if I have a cigarette I buy 20, if I drink I get wasted, If I eat one bad thing I go insane and eat like a full cake.
So now I have a very strict diest and workout regime, I cannot do things in moderation.
I would suggest a similar plan for you.
My meal plan is as so everyday.
BREAKFAST
Two eggs on a wrap with a coffee, protein shake.
LUNCH
Two chicken breasts, brocoli (raw), brown rice, banana, protein shake.
DINNER
Two turkey breasts, 3 crackers with cottage cheese, apple, protein shake.
Equals 190 grams of protein, 120 carbs, 15 grams of fat and 2000 calories

Holy shit this thread is freaking me the fuck out. I'm sitting here eating candy, reading this.
I seldom eat until I'm sick, but sometimes - wait; actually quite a lot of times. like, almost every day when I have dead time between school and homework - I eat a l o t , raiding the kitchen for various sweets. Or almonds. Almonds are good. Anyways: sometimes these excessess go very far, and I end up ashamed too. I am relatively skinny, or at least lean, though.
And you tell me this is an eating disorder? Or diabetes?! Help I dont wanna die, nooo :crying: :(
EDIT: Okay, I'd seriously rather die than drinking protein shakes. Yuck.

nah i think our situation differs. i feel like you're just eating to eat. bingeing, as far as i know, is not really that. it's eating to cover up some emotional hole, problem, whatever. it's different

If you're under 20 and of a healthy weight, then it's probably just your metabolism going at the pace of a Peregrine falcon on meth and nothing to worry about. Although, I'd say get into healthy eating habits now, because when your metabolism slows down all that candy will make you pack on the pounds.

Well..what do you consider eating healthy?
What is your exercise level? (How many times a week do you do sports? Are you physically active? walking, cycling, running)
What is your amount of brain activity (do you study a lot??)
Do you have a lot of stress or have you recently going through or are you going through a stressful episode?
Do you do physical work?
How much weight did you lose in how much time?
Do you drink a lot? Do you do drugs?
What is you age, length, weight?
Relevant questions....if we are to be of any help with advice...

Are you really blazed when this happens? If so, that phenomenon could be explained as 'the munchies.' I know that just last night I ate a package of bagel bites and an enormous bowl of cereal due to this happening.
If not, it's probably that you're metabolizing all the food you eat during the day and end up feeling as though you crave more. The important questions would be as follows:
- How many meals do you eat during an average day?
- How big are these meals and what do they usually contain (in terms of protein, carbs, veggies, fats, sugars, etc...)?
It may be that you are eating 3 good meals a day but your body needs 5-6 smaller ones spread out over a longer period of time. So instead of eating breakfast at 10am, lunch at 1pm, and dinner at 6pm, you'd eat at 10am, 12noon, 2pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm - these meals would be approximately 1/4th the size of your normal meal portions. By spreading it all out in smaller portions over the course of the day, you'll be metabolizing consistently and perhaps you won't end up 'craving' later at night.
Since you eat healthy and are not overweight, I bet this is simply a result of inappropriate eating habits during the day for your body. I'd give the above mentioned 5-6 smaller meals a day plan a shot for a couple months and see how you feel. Just remember not to alter the nutritional content of your total daily intake - you're just changing the portions and the time you consume them.

i exercise about 3 to 4 times a week, usually i run a few miles or so. i'm a student, so yes, i do study, but i'm on break now. i wouldn't say i'm stressed out, but sometimes you're stressed and don't even recognize it. i don't drink, don't really do drugs. the thing is i lost a lot of weight quickly, so maybe these are the after-effects
