"One death is a tragedy - a million a statistic."

I do not believe that Stalin had ever said this because Eichmann, a
henchman of Hitler, said exactly the same thing.

That does not change the fact that perhaps it is a true quote. It really is
unfortunate that people do not get too upset about millions of deaths, but
get upset about some stranger getting murdered across the street. I have
myself cried over single deaths I have heard in the news. But upon
hearing or reading about the deaths of millions, I have difficulty in thinking
of it as anything more than a statistic. And I think most people are like
this. For it is rare that someone cries over reading about millions of people
dying in one of his history books. Perhaps it is because we cannot even
comprehend a million deaths.

Whether it is true or not, did Stalin say this? I cannot find this quotation in
any of his works. I highly doubt that he said it, because Eichmann said
exactly the same thing.

And whether Stalin in fact said this or not, it is true that there are many
fake Stalin quotes floating around.

I don't get your argument. Couldn't someone else just say "I don't think Eichmann said that because Stalin said the same exact thing"?

And I cannot find out where he said it. I have read
Stalin's works and have not found that anywhere.
What is more, the quote does not seem to predate
the 1980s.

Yes Stalin said no such thing, that and all the other such quotes that are creited to Stalin are Cold Watr propaganda, most of which came from a play y Ukrainain Nazis in the 1980's.

I've always believed that that was the case. When one person dies, you can comprehend their personality, for lack of a better word, seizing to exist. When a million people die, you can't possibly comprehend that many people so you don't really feel the same emotion.

"Ideas are more powerful than guns. We don't allow our enemies to have guns, why should we allow them to have ideas?"- Joseph Stalin

Which is ironic because Stalin had lots of guns while suffering from a dirth of good ideas.

but i agree- in the way that when you hear that 30,000 people have died in a war, it seems like a figure. nothing more, nothing less. when you hear 2 deaths, like say in britain, the soham murders, it seems such a tradgedy because you have become more involved. its easier to get involved with 2 rather than 30,000 deaths.
