seriously, when did the default insult of every leftist become a word that the average person probably uses once every two years

I prefer "foolish worm", or "dilatory sloth" myself.

I don't really use it that often to be honest.

In the UK, the SWPers can be heard at most demos obnoxiously shouting "Tory scum!" or whatever through a megaphone. It bothers me as a chant, along with "Nick Clegg, shame on you, shame on you for turning blue" because it implies that only conservative politicians or people who act like conservative politicians are bad.

when leftists wanted to try really hard to impress their right-wing friends and sound tuff like those guys over at stormfront

Yeah, seriously. Labelling any group of people as "scum" smacks of ugly fascist rhetoric, no matter how bad those people may be.

Capitalists are all bags o' scum, -- except the ones that aren't, like Engels. But the general rule for them is scumminess.

I use words which would be described as "bad" on this board.

When I want to be polite and when speaking English though I use the word "Fuckface(s)", "Shithead(s)", "Dicknose(s)" and of course "Asshats".

Dicknose. That's a new one. Thanks, valter.

Something about the word "asshat" makes me laugh inside. I use that one pretty often. I only use "scum" when intentionally being kitschy or something along those lines. I think it's one of those things that most people don't use seriously. I'm sure it originated somewhere. I've seen it used a lot as satire of sectarianism like "Ultra-Left Scum" etc.

I am scum tho? at least someone called me that before..

I think the classic usage in the leftist ghetto is "lumpen scum".

Ron Paul is fucking scum

Martin Blank

I know I used "scum" in a post earlier today, but I don't use it very often. When I do, it's usually referring to a specific type of person. For example, the motherfuckers who outed one of our members in the League five years ago, which resulted in that comrade losing their job. They are (and always will be) fucking scum.

I can't remember ever actually posting or saying that word, I think it's kind of annoying. I had a friend who would always call people scumbags when someone did something sexual that he didn't agree with, it was weird.

Yeah I don't recall using this word but I do remember being called "commie scum" a couple of times.

I agree that we would be wise to develop language to precisely targets the problem involved from a working class communist perspective and yet can communicate this in an emotive way that working people will readily grasp and sympathize with.

If you look at a lot of today's popular insults, they are socially elitist and discriminatory....talking trash about someone's appearance, supposedly "perverted" sexual interests, supposedly inferior intelligence, or any perceived indicator of lower socioeconomic standing in class stratified society. These sort of insults are 180 degrees opposite of what communists should be communicating. Why wield our words impotently like an almost empty squirt gun when we could unleash the fury precisely in an educating effective way with insults that act as a communist verbal bazooka?

We need insults that say what we really mean and gets the point across to anyone who witnesses it, particularly among those of our own class. Who knows...maybe they'll also pick it up and use it when occasions call for it!

But, by itself, that doesn't say anything to anybody about the problem or why you are insulting the other party.

_______________________________
Historically on the left, in polemics, I notice sometimes the insults would delve into ageism.
If you mean niave or ignorant, say that...but before you do, condider if this is a sin, and if insulting is the best way to motivate a correction or not.
If you mean zealously spirited but insufficient in understanding, I will always plead guilty to that myself, and be thankful, because what is a life without an internal flaming spirit that drives one on toward struggle for a better world? All the understanding in the world couldn't save a person with a defeated enslaved spirit. Thank goodness for young people would are ignorant but have a spirit driving them onward to seek a better world somehow, and damn to hell any defeated pessimist grump who tries to extinguish their internal flame rather then educate and enhanse it for a more successful expression

Really?

I guess it depends where you live and who you hang around. It's a pretty commonly used word that I've been hearing since I was a child, long before I ever met any leftists.

scumbags

Also pretty common, and acceptable. In school I wouldn't have gotten in trouble for saying it. If I had called someone a motherfucker that would have different results.

Later in life I learned that scumbag originally meant used condom. Scum=semen, bag=condom. Seems obvious now.

Makes you wonder why the one is more acceptable than the other. Typical nonsensical "bad word" policing crap.

It seems to be a favourite word of the some of the Left groups I've encountered (SWP, with their hilarious demos that disrupt union negotiations and placard waving at BNP members). It's not a term or word I would use, but I understand their need to express their anger and indignation in a way that doesn't use 'bad' language and is therefore more inclusive.
Personally, I like 'fuckbucket'...or anything that mixes the conventional with the unlikely...I mean, what use could one find for a 'fuckbucket?'

workersadvocate
24th January 2012, 20:25
C'mon comrades, let's try to figure out or create better terms.
Communists aren't fundamentally opposed to fucking, to shit or shitting, to semen, to condoms, to animals, etc.
So this says nothing about why we are attempting to insult another party.
Yes, I've relied on many typical indults in the past, because I hadn't given thought tothe lack of precision and effectiveness before, and because I haven't encountered better terms yet.

What if we created new insult terms that said what we are really against in strong emotive terms thay most people would recognize immediately? Think about it...what sort of things do some people do that communists are fundamentally opposed to, and how can we verbally express the righteous fury of working people against those sort of things?
