Due to ongoing pressure from ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders, women in Jerusalem have been excluded from a major conference in Israel that focuses on gynecology advances, reports The Globe and Mail.
The conference is titled "Innovations in Gynecology/Obstetrics and Halacha [Jewish law]." According to The Globe and Mail report, topics that will be addressed at the conference include "ovary implants," "how to choose a suitable contraceptive pill" and "intimacy during rocket attacks." Many qualified females in the OB/GYN field will be in attendance, but due to the new ruling, none of those qualified females is permitted to speak at the podium about these personal female issues.
* The conference is sponsored by Puah, a public organization that offers gynecological and fertility counseling counseling that's in alignment with Jewish law. The public organization receives state funds, reports Haaretz.com.
* The conference will be held Wednesday, says Trust.org.
* Israeli human rights groups have protested the male-only nature of the conference and at least two male Israeli doctors have withdrawn. Those who've resigned from the conference cite the exclusion of women as their main reason. Haaretz.com says the two male doctors are Prof Yuval Yaron from Ichilov Hospital's Lis Maternity Hospital and Prof Uriel Elchalal of Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem.
* "The assertion that women cannot be invited as lecturers in a conference on women's medicine is both professionally absurd and represents an exclusion of women in the fullest sense of the word," said Yaronin a letter to the conference organizers, as quoted by Haaretz.
* The New Israel Foundation has released a statement in regard to the Puah Institute's conference. "We, the feminist and pluralistic organizations signed below, appeal to you to act against the blatant exclusion of women at the Puah Institute's national conference, which is sponsored and supervised by your office," reads part of the statement on NIF.org. The organizations who signed the statement include the Sister for Women in Israel, Association of Crisis Centers of Sexual Assault Victims, People -- The Movement to Promote Social Equality in Israel and Women's Parliament.
* According to Trust.org, women's rights activists say that the ultra-Orthodox makes up 10 percent of the population and that they've become increasingly radical over gender segregation over the years.
