View Full Version : Snowpocalypse in Alaska

I was hoping it would be a bit warmer than usual when I came back home this year, but it was like flying into some goddamn remote base in Antarctica when arrived here recently. My parents told me that there'd been around 20 feet of snow in Cordova, which is pretty nuts even for that area, which usually gets a lot of snow.

There was one picture that I saw which I haven't been able to find again, of some guy who opened his garage door and saw nothing except a solid wall of snow, it was pretty impressive.

God damn. Does it get like this every winter?
Os Cangaceiros

No, this year has been unusually bad in terms of the cold and snow. I guess recently where I live it was -20 degrees, I can't remember the last time it was that cold in this area.

The Nords have that covered, comrade! (Here's me with a [okay, he's maybe 20 feet, but still!] giant snowman in Lapland, Finland.)

I appreciate your faith in my abilities, but no, I'm not Nordic myself, just lived there. They like to build giant snowmen for the tourism around the Arctic Circle. You can find them all over Rovaniemi, mostly in the city and around the "Official" Headquarters of Santa.

The pic of your university is taken from the parking lot behind where the plows pushed all the snow. It's a big hill, for sure. But let's just keep that in mind

No shit it's a pile, I wasn't trying to pass it off as anything less. Giant clumps of ice don't fall from the sky like that naturally.
But actually it's at the bike rack to the right of the entry. Still impressive for me, considering I'm from Florida and the same spot looks like this in summer:

One part of me thinks having such a massive amount of snow falling where i live would be absolutely hilarious but i know it would be a disaster seeing how in holland everything manages to go to shit with a bit of snow.
We haven't been used to serious winters in decades.

Fuck you guys! Usually around this time we have AT LEAST 2-3 feet of snow. This winter sucks. It was 45 Fahrenheit up until 2 weeks ago. Then it FINALLY snowed, and melted away. It's snowing now, but it will melt away :crying:

Haha that sucks. The problem is if we get too little snow this winter, not enough melt water will water the crops in April. Also, how can you not love getting absolutely trashed and go sledding in underwear during a snowstorm?

interesting, here in nothern germany there is like no winter at all, in december there was snowfall like 2 times and it melted the same day it fell, since then nothing. the entire january nothing, mostly + C° degres and so on. hard to belive that 2 years ago we had one of the hardest winters in like 20 years with that much snow that i couldnt drive my bike for 2 months. the city and the state couldnt handle that much snow and just let it stay were it was as long as it wasnt the street.
@op nice pics, a bit scary though.

Snow sucks. I don't know why some people like it. It just falls on the ground here, then freezes into a rock hard crust because it's so goddamn cold. I prefer that to the alternative terrain, though, which is glare ice that's slick as shit and hard as cement. I live next to a gravel road that you can literally ice skate down in some conditions. It's no wonder this Arctic/sub-Arctic hellhole has the lowest per capita population of old people of any US state, there's no guarantee walking outside that you'll make it back with your hip bone intact.
Another thing I hate about where I live is that the sun never really fully shines at this time of the year, even when it's perfectly clear skies. It hangs low in the horizon and emits kind of a dull glow, kind of like early morning light. I just want a day of full sunlight, that's all I ask.
I probably shouldn't be complaining, though...my friend leaves tomorrow for Fairbanks, where it's -40.
