Hitler appointed many Field Marshalls for their competence in matters of Warfare, irrespective of their ideological beliefs. Although he undoubtadley granted many positions based on party loyalty too... I'm not sure about Rommel.

I have heard that Rommel was a German nationalist, who fought for Hitler for the advancement of the German situation and the defense of the German homeland. Rommel, according to the same sources, was not an adamant Nazi in any sense...
I am not sure if that account is reliable, but I thought I would add what I have heard.
apathy maybe

As I understood it Rommel was a Prussian land owner. He loved Germany and hated what nazism was doing to the country. He was in the plot to kill Hitler but was caught. He was given the option of suicide which he took.

Rommel was a a supporter of Nazism for many years and in fact was a very close and trusted aide to Hitler. The army was first and foremost a machine used to perpetrate the imperialist agenda of the third reich. The armed forces were not a centre for ideological fanaticism. Not like the Waffen-SS or the regular security forces. These organizations were designed for the sole purpose of executing the ultra-racist policies of Hitlers government, and they did with pride. This does not mean however, that the army was short of hardcore ideologists. Men lile Jodl, Crebs and Gurdarein were ardent supports of Nazism and took personal satisfaction in their missions to spread Nazism across Europe.
However by the end of 1943 it was obvious to these strategists and tacticians that it was the beginning of the end of the war. Hitlers mental health was beginning to deteriarate at a vast pace and his irrational and unreasonable behaviour, which was already well known, had begun to take on news forms. He started to make fatal errors which resulted in defeats. I think at this point these soldiers had to make a decision. It was either Hitler or Germany.
In July 1944 Colonel Von Stazaffenburg attempted to assasinate Hitler by blowing him up. This was supported by many top ranking armed forces officials, including Rommel. Obviously the attempt failed and it resulted in mock trials and executions. But to prove the closness of Rommel and Hitler, Hitler gave his favourtie general a choice. Either commit suicide or face a humiliating trial and an execution. Rommel chose to commit suicide. He was most definatly a Nazi!

Just because he opted for eating a bullet, doesn't mean that he was a nazi. Someboby mentioned the fact that he was a nationalist, which is quite correct. He wanted the advancement of the German nation. He got involved in the plot but only when it became obvious that Hitler would fail and be the ruin of Germany. Would anyone agree that he followed Hitler because by doing so he could get what he wanted for Germany?
Keep in mind the treaty that helped bring about WW2. Every German wanted Hitler to do it but maybe not the way that he did it. <_<

Rommel ploted to have hitler killed, but ended up haveing to kill himself so he didnt have to go to trial. so that makes me think he was strongly opposed to hilter.

i saw a documentary awhile back, rommel was a nazi, hitlers close friend, and he was friends with a few anti-hitler guys without knowing it. Hitler thought he was in the scheme or whatever, had some guys pick him up and gave him some type of capsule to take and killed himself. that was an abridged version though lol
