Plenty of us live that way or have. I was living on roughly $12,500 for three years. Finally got a decent bump last summer (but I still have plenty of the credit card debt I had accumulated)

I'm doing something I love, and I technically make a bit more, and when I finish my apprenticeship my income will double.
Compared to some of my friends I'm a fucking baller, the cost of living in my area is also relatively low, my rent is only 700 and change, which is shared with my girlfriend. And there are even cheaper places to rent around, in decent neighborhoods.
You can get a decent apartment in my area for around $600, even closer to $500 if you don't mind living in the ghetto.
