The american goverment had this guy sent to syria to have a him tortured because they suspected he was a terrorist;

Maher Arar (http://torontostar.com/NASApp/cs/ContentServer?pagename=thestar/Layout/Article_Type1&call_pageid=971358637177&c=Article&cid=1068159763403) (click link)

Their evidence was that he worked with the brother of a man who was refered to in an al queda document, the syrian government claim the US asked them to torture a confession out of him.

The U.S. has done this for a long time... it helps to achieve a kind of plausible denial... "Oh, but we don't torture anyone, and how were we know our friends were?"

This happened in Vietnam, it has been done in the Middle East and Latin America...

I suggest checking out the "Torture" chapter of William Blum's Rogue State to get a better idea of how common this practice is. He points out that we actually equip bastards for torture out of our foreign aid...

I didn't know it was that common but i had heard that annonymous sources in the current US governemt have said stuff like "we cant kick the shit out of them so we get other people to kick the shit out of them"
