I listed quite a few drugs, but it's not like I use them all the time. A lot of them I've only done once or twice and have no intention of doing again. In fact the only things I use that often are alcohol and weed.
I also forgot to list nitrous, ketamine and mxe. I would stay away from mxe though. I only took a small amount but it really fucked me over. Someone I know also went a bit weird off it because he thought nothing was real so he could do anything.

I think you misunderstood my point. It was not that very few people do any kind of drugs, and that therefore drug use will make you seem exotic to the general population. Some drugs, as you note, are widely used despite still being illegal (I am thinking here of marijuana), though I would caution you not to draw overly sweeping conclusions simply based on your own experience as a young person who moves in youth-oriented leftist circles--subcultures where, unfortunately, drug use tends to be the most concentrated. I think you would be surprised to realize just how many people in this country are not into using illegal narcotics.

My point was that there is, generally speaking, an inverse relationship between how many drugs a person takes, and how dedicated they are to promote revolutionary causes. As you note, drugs are escapist. And if it possible to escape reality by taking drugs, why bother going through the much more difficult process of trying to change that reality? Beyond that, the most pressing concern among leftists should be the fact that addiction and chemical dependency hamstring people's ability to think clearly and inhibits the level of commitment they can make to any revolutionary cause. How many heroin or crack addicts do you expect to find on the front lines of a revolution? They'll be too busy searching for their next fix. And let's not forget that once a revolutionary situation develops, the state will be more than happy to use drug charges against people as a convenient means of political repression. It simply doesn't make sense to make yourself an easy target for legal trouble by engaging in unnecessary behavior that can be counter-productive in all the other ways I mentioned above.

Do whatever you feel like doing. If one day you feel like getting drunk then do it. It's you who are drunk not everyone else. If one day you feel like going on a mescaline trip then do it (after thinking about it and having a sitter). It's you. I'm drunk right now- this is the advice of a drunk. Is it good advice? Is it not doog advice cause it's coming from sonmeone who is drunk? I think not. It's good advice coming from somoene who is drunk.

I think you misunderstood my point. It was not that very few people do any kind of drugs, and that therefore drug use will make you seem exotic to the general population. Some drugs, as you note, are widely used despite still being illegal (I am thinking here of marijuana), though I would caution you not to draw overly sweeping conclusions simply based on your own experience as a young person who moves in youth-oriented leftist circles--subcultures where, unfortunately, drug use tends to be the most concentrated. I think you would be surprised to realize just how many people in this country are not into using illegal narcotics.The circles I'm in where this is more openly done or talked about are social and cultural.


My point was that there is, generally speaking, an inverse relationship between how many drugs a person takes, and how dedicated they are to promote revolutionary causes. As you note, drugs are escapist. And if it possible to escape reality by taking drugs, why bother going through the much more difficult process of trying to change that reality? I think this point is just moralism. If someone's a revolutionary and a film buff are they not dedicated revolutionaries if they spend some of their free-time going to a film screening?


Beyond that, the most pressing concern among leftists should be the fact that addiction and chemical dependency hamstring people's ability to think clearly and inhibits the level of commitment they can make to any revolutionary cause. How many heroin or crack addicts do you expect to find on the front lines of a revolution? They'll be too busy searching for their next fix. And let's not forget that once a revolutionary situation develops, the state will be more than happy to use drug charges against people as a convenient means of political repression. It simply doesn't make sense to make yourself an easy target for legal trouble by engaging in unnecessary behavior that can be counter-productive in all the other ways I mentioned above.

A video soon to be sold by your very own Haymarket, The Black Power Mixtape, explicitly makes this point about drug abuse in describing the decline of revolutionary aspirations among African Americans in the mid 1970s, the time when massive amounts of drugs flooded the inner cities.

If someone who is a dedicated revolutionary goes drinking or drugging instead of political commitments, then we are probably no longer talking about recreational use and escapism in which case their lack of dedication and self-discipline is probably the least of their immediate problems.

I think that it's perfectly fine for revolutionaries or any workers for that matter to get drunk with friends or do some E or LSD on a free weekend or go to dance clubs or just play video games for 6 hours straight during their downtime without questioning their dedication.

As far as mixing recreational drinking or drug use with political work - I think there are definately political and practical reasons not to do this in any way.
