Does this really really piss you off?

When people ask me what music I listen to, it really really annoys me and I can't explain why lol

Does anyone else experience this?

It does because (incoming hipster response!) I listen to a lot of shit people haven't heard of. Probably because it sucks.
I'm not trying to be hip, or elitist. I wish I had friends or coworkers who had the same taste as me. Only one coworker I know appreciates some good black and death metal. He's a good guy. But when some of my favorite music is death metal, skramz, shoegaze, noise rock, thrash, etc. and you work with people who like Lil'Waye or boring radio-rock and bullshit, then yeah... Some of my friends are into punk and hardcore, but still not too spot-on with me.

I've also had some awkward conversations about music. Some guy was telling me a few weeks ago he typically listens to underground music people have never heard of. I eventually asked him for some of his favorite bands, to which he responds: Nickelback, Linkin Park, Bush, Lacuna Coil.

I don't know what's worse: his shit taste, or the fact he thinks those bands are "underground"

Mine's even weirder, I hate songs that are in English, I prefer songs much more if I can't understand what's being said so if someone saw my ipod they would be like "wtf"

Most of what I listen to dates from the 1940s or is a soundtrack, so it kindof bugs me when people do that, yes.

It doesn't piss me off persay, they're just trying to make conversation. I'll tell them about bands I like that they've probably heard of and if they turn out to be into the same types of genres we can go into discussing more undergroundish stuff.

I actually like it when people ask me what music I listen to. I love music and am more than willing to talk about the artists I like. As well as maybe get a few names of some artists I could look up...

9 times out 10 people usually responed as follows, "Oh, you like THAT kind of music...? Oh..."

It depends whose asking. It really bugs me when my Grandmother asks me what stuff I like because I have no idea how I would even begin explaining to an 80 year old woman who thought the Stones were too loud and the Beatles were 'a load of rubbish' what 'Djent' means. I'm fairly enthusiastic about the music I do like so if someone my own age asks I have no problem explaining to them, although they usually do once they find my encyclopaedic knowledge of every band to ever wield a seven-string :D.

At least some people are polite when I answer them and they don't like what I listen to/don't know anything about it. So generally I dislike it.

People don't usually ask me this, but if they did, I'd be happy to tell them. I listen to a lot of South American and Latin American folk music from the 60s and 70s. That's usually what I say, because if I start naming artists, noone knows who I'm talking about, except maybe my parents and family friends from the same region.
