There are stories of military units going back to battles of WWII but I can't think of any where the military unit goes back to the Eastern Front.

I.E it would be a good way to explore historical revision of USSR role of WWII to have such a story with solders of a modern Eastern European nation going back to the Eastern Front. For example a modern Polish warship going back to 1942 where it become evident Leningrad is their only safe port and that the troops of Leningrad are not the demons they thought.

Or you could even have a Russian aircraft carrier staffed by Russians born after the fall of the USSR go back go back and the crew talk about if they should fight to liberate Leningrad and when they do talk to the people of Leningrad about their thoughts of the USSR and if the crew should continue fighting in the Great Patriotic War.

We can really dig deep by exploring the crews reaction to the aftermath of World War II, for example do they sit by and let Stalin sell out the revolutions of Eastern Europe, fight for revolution or for NATO.

I don't know of anything like that, but it sounds like it could be an interesting story if done right.

Well the problem I find with traditional WWII time travel stories is that it doesn't really challenge the consciousness of the time travelers, it is more about the morals of changing history that the time travelers (and the story) and the time travelers view of the fractions doesn't really develop as they as they view the war first hand.

By throwing a modern military unit to the Eastern Front there is the specter of communism, and that preserving their time line might not be what is moral as not only is there the fact their modern firepower could make a difference in the war but in the aftermath and reversely that even with all their firepower they can't bomb a revolution into existing.

I think the most effective way to convey what you are talking about would be to focus more on the personal lives of the characters rather than the wider political themes. Perhaps one of the modern soldiers could be a Neo-Nazi at the start but form different opinions after forming close friendships with his WW2 counterparts. Maybe it could even turn out that one of his new communist friends is actually his grandfather or something. Not really very original but I think it could turn out nice.

If there's going to be one, most likely it'll be on a site called www.alternatehistory.com (http://www.alternatehistory.com). I don't know any off hand but they've got a subforum called 'Alien Space Bats' that deals with time travel and the like. I don't really get that involved in the site these days but there are a few gems on there that you might enjoy. Just be warned; it's a site full of people who like empires, ancient military and shit like that so it's easy to get frustrated by a few of their perceptions of communism etc but there's also some anarchists, communists and the like (such as myself) who try to educate them whenever we can.

I was thinking that, like a Russian that despised the USSR letting their guard down in Leningrad drinking with the defending forces in a moment of peace and learning their are not so bad and getting culture shock of what revolutionaries are actually like by talking to the more militant and class conscious of the soldiers.

Yet the problem is these kind of time travel stories tend to include political themes as the characters become central in how events unfold.
