I always thought the war officially began in 1964/1965.

1965 was only when the U.S. starting sending hundreds of thousands of troops to Vietnam. U.S. intervention goes back far before that... the U.S. was footing the bill for the French attempt to reconquer Vietnam that failed in the 1950s...
