Granted, he's more of an aristocratic reaction to the moral decay of the bourgeoisie than actually anti-capitalistic, but still an interesting take on it.

Interesting article. I was always under the impression that detective fiction from that time had a sort of bourgeois - even social-darwinist - in outlook. The Edgar Allen Poe Dupan stories are like that - it's Holmes without any flaws, and intellectual superman who uses bourgeois science and thinking to create order out of what, on first glance, is chaos or random meaninglessness. In a lot of this genre it's "simple folk" who fall for the mystery and think that something supernatural is happening while the professional, the detective, pinpoints the material truth behind the illusion.
