View Full Version : Some literature on communes/collectives

So recently I've had a spark of interest in communes and collectives. I have a basic understanding of some of the well-known communes, like the Twin Oaks (a more Anarcho-Primitivist collective business from my understanding) but I want some history of other successful collectives/communes that I can read. My end goal is to see what errors are generally made and if the failure of most worker communities is directly related to poor management or other reasoning. From what little I've read, it's more directly related to the environmental conditions and conflicts between drugged out hippies, but I want to learn more.

Just been more interested ever since I watched a bit where John Stossel brought an example of some 16th century collective failing because of sheep overpopulation, and blamed it on the 'collective incentive' rather than primitive herding techniques and a lack of knowledge and managing.
Because every 16th century herder/farmer had the means to apply modern and more civilized techniques, right?
