View Full Version : "Christmas spirit" and new year resolutions

Watching festive stuff on TV reminds me of how fake this whole christmas spirit stuff is. It annoys me when people say "christmas is a time of giving and kindness", because if you're going to be giving and kind, why not do it all the time? It seems as though far too many people have to put up with family and other people they don't like around this time of year purely because "it's christmas".

On the topic of new year resolutions, it's the same basic idea. Why do we have to wait until next year to make changes in our lives? What's wrong with next week, or even tomorrow? Obviously some changes cannot be made instantly, but the point remains. I feel as though people just use the new year as an excuse to carry on with their bad habits for as long as possible. New year ≠ new opportunities (...unless you're selling calendars or buying furniture).

I'm experiencing the joys of high school/college too at the moment... can't wait to escape that totalitarian hellhole.

I make resolutions all the time: I will drink less, eat less, exercise more, etc. I never stick to them though :(

Resolutions- write every day again, get published twice, stop drinking so much alcohol, take and use specific college courses tactically rather than 'for a degree', move my life into the next chapter.

I stopped making resolutions years ago, and the "Christmas spirit" just pisses me off, especially when it involves being forced to read really corny stories that are supposed to be heartwarming but just ring completely false.
Or maybe I just like to complain.

You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch.

I like christmas fine. I like my family as in my parents and siblings (what we Dutch call 'gezin') I dont really care for being with the larger family though.

We have second christmas day in the Netherlands, just like other countries have boxing day I guess, yay more christmas tomorrow!

Is it the 24th and 25th or the 25th and 26th then? I was quite surprised when my Swedish friend told me they celebrate it on the 24th there a few years back, then I realised it was a whole bunch of other European countries too.

25th and 26th. We did do gifts on the 24th this year though.

Everyday brings the possibility of new things. Why should new years be any different.

Resolution: Quit smoking (for reals this time). Problem is, my life is in limbo right now and within a month or so I will be in some high stress adjustment phase, hopefully if I find a job. In which case, the timing of quitting would have to be in the short time before or after I get settled in. Ahh, there's always some high stress shit you gotta deal with which makes quitting smoking difficult. I wish I could go to tobacco rehab.

Well that's one more reason to quit smoking tobacco and start smoking heroin! Nah but anyways, sorry to hear about your situation and good luck with finding a job. I guess I should be happy I'm still in education, even if it is painful.

What do you teach, if I may ask?

EDIT: Oh, nm, I guess you meant still getting your education...:/

I'm not a teacher, I'm a student . If I were a teacher I'd get sacked on the first day. Sorry if I worded it badly.

EDIT: Oh the joys of editing forum posts and reading things late lol.

I never really could understand why my family celebrates Christmas. For starters, my folks practiced this tiny little sect of the Eastern mysticism that has exactly fuck all to do with Christianity (not that Christmas has much to do with Christianity, but that's an entirely different discussion). I began giving even less a shit some 15 years ago when my belief functionally shrank to nil. Still, I like getting free shit and my mother likes buying Christmas presents so who the hell am I to argue?

As for New Year's resolutions, well, my experience has been that a sure fire way to make sure I don't accomplish something is to make a resolution about it. Although, if you excuse the slip I made (primarily because I was pretty shit hammered) on Christmas Eve, I quit smoking back on December 3rd... so I guess you could say I did follow through this year, I just got an early start.

Think again. That's exactly what it'll be like, especially if you go into service industry work which is all you're likely to get these days.

Editor's note: Europe isn't the only place that celebrates what Americans conceive of as Christmas on the 24th. Most Latin American countries do the same thing. It's because the 25th is supposed to be a religious holiday and as such a day of reverence... So they do all the merrymaking the day before.

I was about to say "amen to that", but then I realised how contradictory it would be.

Well the reason I still have the pleasure of listening to *****y, over emotional teachers eat away at my mind is because I chose to stay on and do A-levels, so hopefully I'll have more options than service industry work when I finish.

Ah right, cheers for the info. I think I should start celebrating it on the 24th instead then lol.

I got loads of tough, thick astrophysics books to read, and my resolution is to read them and stop procrastinating over things. I really irritate myself. Preparing for university 4 years early ftw.
