I read it many years ago though, and should read it again. I prefer both A Brave New World and Fahrenheit 451 over 1984

All three paint a picture of what the future may hold. Fahrenheit 451 actually mentioned wall screens (which I liken to plasma tv's).

All are good books and essential reads.

Have you seen the movie Equilibrium? It has elements from all 3 novels.

I'm actually reading it right now.It depresses me(what dosen't?).But its a good book.I just find it very interesting.People identify that system with total authorititan communism, but really its just fascism to the extreme. But dude,George Orwell's books are must reads.Even though I dislike him,I still respect the literature and creativity.

I respect Orwells work, and his theories on language.

1984 can get dry at times, but it's still a good read

What, Orwell, dull?

You're missing out, commieboy. Try reading some of his non-fiction, then. Please.

Its an excelent book, and I found it highly gripping and extreamly depressing, Brave New World is good, but it is not as well written.

Politics and the English Language - 1946 (http://www.resort.com/~prime8/Orwell/patee.html)

I'd also recommend "Down and Out in Paris and London".

It's "special" because of its political meaning.

Don't fret, I had to explain the book to a guy in class too, he didn't understand why everything was called "victory coffee" or "victory gin" (or whatever the booze was, I can't remember).

Just work through it. A guy a work gave me a science fiction novel to read, he said that it's really good and that he thinks I'll like it. And I'm struggling through the first chapter. I promised him that I'd keep reading it, but it's just not my flavour. But I'll keep at it, for now

try animal farm first, its a bit lighter and more managable, also a better read IMO but not a better book.

All of Orwells books are out of copywrite and can be found on the Internet. Project Guternburg is a good place to start. (They are still under copywrite in the USA, but you folks don't count being so backward and all ;>)

1984, you could call that an anti-socialist book almost. It shows what can happen if you let the wrong people rise to the top. Ingsoc, as the form of government is called in "Oceania", is a massively radical and oppressive Socialist/Totalitarian Government. They even have what's called thought police, and if you so much as make a wrong facial expression they'll be all over your ass, as Winston Smith, the book's main character, found out towards the end of the book.

I highly recomend that you read this book, even if you don't agree with it. It's truely very very scary, and very deep, with many twists and betrayls and all that stuff. To anyone that did read it, I would love to have a discussion about it, it's really one of my favorite books, 2nd only to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

It was a good book and had some interesting ideas like doublespeak and doublethink but overall I've read a lot better. Goldstein was so obviously Trotsky. I also kind of resented his implication that the proletariat is too stupid to liberate itself.
