That aren't horrible. I'd like to figure out exactly what I'm doing with life in the next year and then follow that general path. I think career tests might help. I don't really feel like I'm good at much.

I don't think that a test will help you with your problem. It seems to me as though you'd be better off starting with dual set of goals: what you like, and what'll make money. If possible you could combine these but most likely you'll have to work a job to make money to allow you to do what you like.
A "career" is usually something you stumble into rather than something you plan for. Everyone I ever knew (with a few exceptions) who had a 'career goal' has long since dropped it in favor of something else. If a career is what you're looking for then you might start somewhere interesting. For example, you like animals so you go get a low-wage job at a vet clinic or a shelter. Then you move up from there to a better position, etc... etc...
Just my thoughts.

The problem isn't you, the problem is the society that expects you to shoehorn yourself into a single "career" for the rest of your working life.

I know I know, I hate the idea of a career just to survive to do what I really want to do part time. I'm getting older and worried that I'm never gonna settle. I'm a goal oriented person so I really need something to work towards but none of the options seem worthwhile. I've had a ton of different jobs in my life all of which were pretty much deadend and I'm just tired of it. What I think I need is a bit of hope and direction but I have yet to discover that. If I don't find a career that I love I at least want to find a career that I'm good at. That's super important to me.

Definitely. The most important thing for 'settling' is having the resources necessary to do so, not the exact idea of what/when/where. So I think you should consider what it is that you're good at and then look for jobs in your area which highlight these characteristics. Gotta start somewhere.

I dunno, my suggestion would be finding your nearest community college and talking to some of the people in their placement office. Oftentimes they have some rather good career counselors that can be of help. Further, because of the nature of community colleges, this doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to funnel you into a four year degree or on some path that requires a post-grad education. There are a ton of AS degrees out there that'll get you to work in just two years... work that's a hell of a lot better than what you've probably been doing. Hell, some of their programs aren't even degrees but certificate programs that are even shorter. My old CC offered shit like construction science, trucking school, and (something you'd probably be interested in ;)) fire science.

I'm just going to start taking classes again. After two energy drinks and babbling to my roommate for about two hours I've re-learned that I enjoy helping people and I'm good at it. I need to take courses that compliment that natural skill set. I've thought about nursing programs and social worker case manager type stuff in the past and may pursue them as they're two areas where I actually retain the knowledge. Especially medical knowledge. I've heard the pros and cons of both over the years. Regarding my desire to write- I've been in honors level courses since I was young and taken hundreds of courses already, I've been to big writing conferences, talked with well known writers one on one and gotten kudos from a lot of people I respect but I don't think taking more courses is gonna help me at all.

He just needed to prove that he's only aware of about 10% of the field of social work. Not all of social work is CPS, BMH.

Most of the career aptitude tests available are crap on their own and the ones that are worth a damn are so expensive or hard to find it's not worth bothering with.
What you might do is take as many of the online free ones as you can find and see if a pattern emerges.
As for the rest of it, I have no idea, I'm in the same boat. I dont really fit with a lot of the "mainstream" jobs and my desire to avoid devoting myself utterly to the idea of enriching another person to the exclusion of my own humanity limits my options somewhat.

You said you like to write and you're well spoken, so why don't you pursue something like that?
