Oil workers in the Mangystau Province of Kazakhstan have been on strike for several months. Recently, they were brutally attacked by police, resulting in at least 10 deaths (see: http://libcom.org/blog/striking-workers-slaughtered-kazakhstan-16122011 & http://www.nytimes.com/2011/12/17/world/asia/deaths-in-rare-violence-in-kazakhstan.html?_r=2&ref=world ).

A Workers Solidarity fund has been set up to "provide support for the strikers families and especially children." It's being overseen by a committee of well known figures in Kazakhstan to make sure all the money goes where it's intended.

For $25 US dollars (or more), you will get a copy of the Sun Rise Above CD "Prisoners of War," a poster, and a sticker sent to you anywhere in the world. All the money left over after shipping will be immediately contributed to the fund. (See http://sunriseabove.bandcamp.com/album/prisoners-of-war to preview the album)

Email hiphopposter (at) yahoo.com if you're interested.

Or contribute directly to the fund yourself. The bank info is:

I convinced my IWW GMB to donate what we can afford. We'll be passing around a hat at our next GMB meeting (roughly 2 weeks), collecting whatever people can spare, and I will personally deposit the contributions immediately. I wish our meeting was sooner, but this is the best I can do for now.
Solidarity.

Before we (my IWW and myself) donate a sum of money to this fund, can some legitimate information or source be given that this fund/account is legit? I'm not yelling conspiracy or scam, but having some reassurance would help, since we're all working-class people who limited funds.

The account mentioned above is linked to Campaign Kazakhstan (http://www.campaignkazakhstan.org). The account itself was set up by Paul Murphy, a CWI member and Member of the European Parliament with the knowledge and support of the workers in Zhanoazen though the exact time escapes my memory. It was established shortly after Paul visited Kazakhstan in July and I think the fund is administered by Paul, Essenbek Uktashbayev (Chairperson of the "Leave People's Home's Alone" campaign, an active supporter of the strike and a member of the Socialist Movement Kazakhstan) and I think there might be one other person. If you need anything confirmed, I'd suggest sending Paul an email at [email protected] and [email protected]

The Swedish Miners Union Club 12 in Malmfälten donated 15 000 SEK and took a solidarity statement which read in part:
"The violence against the workers reached new heights on December 16 when nearly 70
people were shot dead and 500 injured when police and military
... attacked a demonstration in the city Zjanaozen.
IF Metall's Department of Malmfälten has previously sent money to support
the strikers and their families, who live in difficult conditions
and can not even satisfy the daily needs. Now Mining Club 12 do the same thing and contribute 15 000 SEK.
Meanwhile we call on the Swedish trade union movement to actively
support for the Kazakh oil workers under the motto "A victory for
workers anywhere is a victory for workers everywhere! "
To organize a broad campaign of support ranging from financial aid to
reception and cooperation with Kazakh labor leaders in exile -
it is to make the action of the trade union movement's principles, in a
situation that requires more than just statements! "
