Tell me what you guys/girls think of this: a pawn chess piece with "el tercer estado (the third estate)" written across it. The third estate being the commoners of pre-Enlightenment Europe and the pawn representing the common chess piece that does the bidding for the higher class piece to exploit.

Good? Bad? I'm thinking about getting something like this.

Being a lover of tattoos (I have a sleeve) and the French Revolution I feel I must comment. I like the idea a lot but I'm having a little bit of trouble picturing it. Would "the third estate" be written across the base of it? Or across a scroll of sorts?

Also how big are we talking here, and where do you want it? Or have you gotten that far?

I'm not sure how big I want it or where I want it yet. This is my first tattoo so I'm still not sure about everything yet. I wanted to either get it on my back or bicep because they seemed like they'd hurt the least.

So you'd have "El Tercer Estado" written across a scroll kind of like this...?

- across the front of the pawn, maybe with the ends wrapping around the back of the pawn?

lol, don't pick a spot based off of how painful it may or may not be. Pick a spot you really like! It will be a little painful regardless.

Some other spots to consider - the shoulder pr the chest, on one of your pecs (the left one! lol), these are some good spots. I like you ideas for spots but I'm just throwing some more out there to consider.

Are you wanting to go B&W or color do you think?

That's not what I originally envisioned, but now that you gave me that idea I think I like it better. I'll probably go with black and white. Thanks for the input.

Thats a lot of letters to put in a banner. Just saying, to properly fit that in a banner and have it proportional you're looking at a tattoo the size of an open hand.

I had originally just wanted the words to overlap horizontally across the pawn, without the banner.

I don't really know what you mean by that.

If you wanted it to be smaller, you could have the words outside of the pawn, like, over top and bottom, in a simple lettering.

I think he probably means something similar to the way people write "Mom" on a heart, lol.

Yeah, this is what I was thinking. Either that or instead of the banner, have it written across the base of the actual pawn itself. I've always been of the mind that if you're gonna do a pectoral tattoo you might as well go big anyway... assuming that's the way he wants to go.

Putting the lettering inside of the actual pawn would make it even bigger than using a banner.

People always want their tattoos to small, and artists with no ethics will oblige them if they have money in their pockets.

Right... I was basically agreeing with you which is why I said he'd have to go big. And in my first statement what I meant was that I think he was saying he originally wanted the lettering to laterally bisect the pawn. Like you, though, I don't think that'll look all that great.

A big chess piece pawn would look dumb... Not enough detail

put a mustache and hat on it.
