In American disaster films (outside of maybe Romero ones) the military are usually seen as the saving grace, the President is calm and collected, and there is that one libertarian hero who ends up saving humanity.

American disater films incorporate American individualism, militarism and nationalism. Also they throw in elements about family values.

British and European ones tend to literally whack you in the face with the most depressing bleack scenerios ever thought of by man. I mean, real depressing stuff.

Yet, the hope is not found in the military, which are usually the villians or turn out to be villians, nor in the country's leaders, it's found in the group that is featured in the film. Usually it's a group of unrelated people who happen to find each other in the midst of all the chaos.

European disaster films tend to stress that humanity needs to come together to battle the injustice inflicting the world. The world in the end may still be bleak but there is a bit more hope in it once people banded together. There is no one person hero and the family values tend to be a more rounded family found in humanity.

Is this more or less correct? I'm being pretty general here.

I just watched a brittish tv series called survivors and it seem to confirm what you just mentionned.

Personally, since i discovered the brittish genre, i really dont want to go back.

You mean like threads, a British film about nuclear war where the military keeps all the food for themselves and everyone else become inbred and starved? That's quite a good film. I know what you mean about American disaster films as well.
