Israel's interior minister, Eli Yishai, promised to deport the tens of thousands of Africans who have crossed into his country illegally in recent years.
"I will safeguard the Jewish majority and the state, and I ensure that the last of the Sudanese, and the Eritreans, and all of the infiltrators, to the last of them, will return to their countries," Yishai, of the Shas party, told Army Radio. "I have pity on the people of Israel."
Approximately 40,000 of the Africans are now in Israel, most of them allowed to settle and work in major cities, though authorities generally grant them neither refugee status nor formal refugee status.
The influx has worried some Israelis about a potential demographic threat, while others have argued that the migrants should be taken in on humanitarian grounds.
The Interior Ministry, which says most of the Africans come to Israel for work rather than asylum from persecution, has been exploring ways of repatriating them.
Racist ass state.

Really tells you all you need to know about Israel being a 'democracy'.

lol, Shas. If anyone still doubts that the Israeli government is going full-on fascist, just a look at the coalition partners should satisfy them.

What. Of all the things the Israelis could do, I did not expect a throwout of the Africans.

What if some are Jews? What if some of them have converted?

Israel claims to be a homeland to all Jews, but this is misleading. When they say Jews, what they really mean are white Jews of European descent. It's been documented that Jews of African or Middle Eastern descent face discrimination in Israel.

...so sick of hearing about this overtly racist, imperialist fuck of a nation / government enjoying considerable international support, mostly from the West, while Iran and anyu other Muslim country is demonised when it does anything similiar.
Iraq invaded Kuwait, first Gulf War, international condemnation.
Israel occupies West bank, UN tutts a bit.

Also, they only consider you Jewish if you're Jewish on your mother's side. I've tried to defend my criticisms of Israel by noting that I'm ethnically Jewish on my father's side and somebody literally told me "WELL THAT DOESN'T COUNT."

Then why did Israel go out of its way to airlift most of the Ethiopian Jewish population to Israel?

I'm not going to generalize, as of course government is one thing, rabbis are another and the people are a third thing, but the Ethiopians did face substantial opposition from many fronts upon their arrival.
Racism, unfortunately is far from being an Israeli particularity.

IIRC there's a sort of double standard where they take you in if you're ethnically jewish but not halachically jewish (the holocaust standard basically) but the best you'll get is second class citizen and the chief rabbi is trying to get this closed: apparently they care more about religious converts; a lot of the newly arrived russian jews are, for example, not "legit" jews for the rabbis.
I seem to remember there being a few holocaust survivors who actually have trouble getting any support because a number of organizations will basically ignore them because of this.

I doubt it's the ethiopian jews; there's something like a quarter million of them in Israel. That said they still experience racism and tensions between the various groups (also I'd remind that sephardic jews are also largely european jews in terms of geographic space occupied in the past few hundred years).

There's also the Mizrahi Jews, who are from the Middle East and North Africa, and they form a definite second-tier in Israeli society. Not as overtly so as black Jews (let alone Palestinians), and the increasing rate of inter-marriage is improving things somewhat, but it's still there. You might compare it to the status of "white ethnics" in early 20th century America.

The mother side bit seems to come from Rabbinical Judaism, which is obviously the largest. I never really understood the reason why they took such an approach though, the OT traced it through the male line.. it was Patriarchal in general.

Imagine if Sarkozy, or Merkel or someone else said that. But of course, Israelis are allowed to say this without any consequences.

And you should have asked whether the SS guards at the death camps would have considered that a viable reason for release.

You might want to check how many Roma Sarkozy has deported in the last two years.

Well the Nuremberg laws said you were a Jew if you had three or four Jewish grandparents, and a 'Mischling' if you had one or two. I have no idea how these categories related to what happened later and how many of the latter survived. However if your fathers side of the family were Jewish and your mothers were not then you would not be seen as Jewish by the synagogues and in any case a man that would marry goyim wouldn't have been very religious, if at all. The point then being it seems very unlikely that you would have been raised as a practicing Jew and so would have been easier to conceal yourself amongst other Germans, Poles etc. This is all speculation really and I wouldn't be surprised if I've got it all wrong as just as many 'Mischlings' died in the camps as 'full' Jews'. It's interesting though and I wonder if anyone's ever done any research on it.

On the subject of this thread is there anything to suggest this will actually happen. Shas are a junior partner in the coalition and even though this guy is Interior Minister it seems unlikely he could push this through on his own. This seems more party posturing than anything else.

Even the American racists have a bit more tact than that, they usually go on about jobs and culture rather than saying that they want to safeguard the white majority. Its kind of disgusting how no one is allowed to protest the racism of the Israeli state.

Well, it's "technically" not racism, since it's based along religious belief rather than race.

Being Jewish is about ethnicity and culture as much/more than it's about religious conviction. Otherwise "non-religious Jews" wouldn't exist.

'Jew' nowadays generally means someone who is part of a Jewish ethnic group e.g. Ashkenazi.

I only said that, because they are deporting Somalians, while not deporting Ethiopians. So in this case, it's not about ethnicity but about religious conviction.

You are completely ignoring the context of Israel. Israel was created to specifically be a jewish state - and Israelis don't pretend otherwise. The common belief among many Israeli's is that they just can't function as a significant demographic minority in any other society. It's kind of hard to convince them otherwise, when the past 2,000 years have been full of pogroms and general antisemitism.
