Anyone here like Jack Nicholson? I particularly liked him in Reds, The Last Detail, As Good as it Gets, Chinatown, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and Terms of Endearment. I though About Shmidt was shit. Not his performance, but the movie itself sucked ass. A Few Good Men is good too.

has anyone seen EASY RIDER. nicholson is incredible in that movie even though hes got a shorter part. also dennis hopper and peter fonda are very good in it too. i think it was hoppers first directing/writing gig and so its as insane as you might expect it to be. first rate.

I thought Nicholson was especially great playing the Joker in Batman...
Can someone tell me what the point of About Schmidt was? It was trumped up as being this movie of the year, and I saw it, and I could not see much of a point...

Never met Schmidt. There's a lovely story behind that now infamous "Here's Johnny" scene. Anybody like to hear it? Too bad, because I'm going to tell it anyway.
Stanley Kubrick (as any dedicated fan knows) was undeniably anal retentive when it came to his movies. It was not uncommon for scenes in his movies to be shot and re-shot 40 or 50 times. That scene was no different.
Problem was, every time Stanley decided the scene wasn't right, a whole lot of things had to be done. To begin with, they used real doors. This meant Jack had to chop his way through a solid core door with an axe 54 times that day. Not to mention, every time Stan was dissatisfied the crew had to hang a new door. I imagine Shelley Duvall was a little stressed after spending 16 hours in that bathroom. Anyway, I don't remember what the original line was in that scene, but it wasn't "Heeeeeeer's Johnny!" The fact is, Jack finally got so sick of Stanley's re-takes that he decided to make fun of him on film. Apparently, it wasn't the actors or cinematography Stanley disliked. It was the line. The sarcasm stayed in the film, and it became one of the most oft quoted lines ever.
BTW, am I the only person here who's seen "Five Easy Pieces"?

I saw Five Easy Pieces. I wasn't a big fan of it, but I can imagine watching it again and enjoying it.
