So is the $75 fee a tax? It's rather unclear.

And, actually according to the law fire departments don't have to respond to every fire because a "duty to everyone is a duty to no one." It is called the Public Duty Doctrine. It is designed to prevent frivolous lawsuits. There is a way around the doctrine but it is rather convuluted.

I remember some ancap I was talking to awhile back suggesting a system like this. I brought up the point "hey wouldn't people just let houses burn then" and they said no.

How can a so-called civilised and developed western society continue down the path of evaporating the "duty of care" that should be a basic right, not a privilege, within public bodies and emergency services in the name of profiteering ? Of course I exclude the police/military from that list, as their duty of carelessness is pretty obvious, but you'd think that the amount of money that the US spends on 'defence' that they could spend money ACTUALLY saving/defending their own people from losing their worldly possessions and from dying in the streets from illness.
