SOUTH FULTON, Tenn. (AP) — A Tennessee couple has lost everything after their home burned to the ground as firefighters watched and did nothing.

Vicky Bell told WPSD-TV that she called 911 when her mobile home in Obion County caught fire. Firefighters responded but did not put out the blaze because she does not subscribe to the local fire service (http://bit.ly/t639Wo ).

Bell says she could "look out my mom's trailer and see the trucks sitting at a distance."

Rural residents who want fire protection can get service from the nearby town of South Fulton, but they must pay a $75-a-year fee. South Fulton Mayor David Crocker said that if the city's firefighters responded to people who didn't pay there would be no incentive for anyone to subscribe. He said firefighters will help when people are in danger, regardless of whether they have paid.
Here are some lovely comments that I read from the second article:

Blake, remember, if they point a finger at the fire department, they have 3 pointing back at themselves. They should consider themselves fortunate to have the option that is provided. The fuck? Yeah, fortunate. A family just lost their home. Fire fighters are now a privilege, they should care less for humanity and more for draconian laws.

I particularly liked this comment:

A real firefighter would say the hell with the policy and save what they can!Too bad he was shot down quickly:

And then prepare to turn in your gear.
Someday we will let you be a "real" firefighter and you will learn reality. Till then, stay in school and try to get an education. What is wrong with people? Have a heart. Rules, laws, and money over people, huh?

I don't know, maybe my frustration is clouding some other perspective from which I should view this story. I realize that it could be much worse and these people could have lost their lives, but let's be honest; possessions and especially a home are very important to people.

This happened earlier this year somewhere else. It's an excellent talking point about the sad reality of capitalism.

Yeah, I didn't know about the first event until I read this article. Truly sad.

Reading the comments section on any story like this always makes me loose some faith in humanity... and in its place makes me think of how violent the coming revolution will be.

I believe it was this same state that it happened in. Sounds like they set up the perfect Rothbardian society for themselves.

Yeah, but you always gotta consider who's subscribed to a newspaper online and actually takes the time to comment on an article on the website. It is, all in all, a total waste of time.

It is sick and probably just as disgusting is how people revel in others misery. I mean how fucked up do you have to be to make fun of a family that just lost everything? Honestly this is the kind of wonderful society that Capitalism leads to. If you don't have the money to survive then fuck off.:(

Often times people who make light of tragic situations and revel in other's misery and misfortune are those who have never had to really fight through anything or struggle through any real pain or tragedy. I believe if everyone had to struggle through a hard situation or struggle than people would be more empathetic and be more respectful towards eachother.

Even then I believe our society is based on the individual. And therefore being compassionate and helping your fellow man is not seen as a priority. It's about getting ahead, and then looking back and laughing at all of those people you stepped on to get there. And when they get angry and ask for their fair share, the assholes says, "Sorry, you should have worked harder and gotten your master's degree." Some people just can't grasp that working hard everyday of your life doesn't mean you'll be successful, not here.

It's funny too. Most of the people who believe this are conservative religious people... who talk big, and say they donate to charities because they're a good christian. But the second shit like this happens it fucking, "Let their house burn! Fucking lazy commie bastards! Not paying firefighters extra to do their civic duty!" Yeah, how christian of you, I'm sure your god would be proud that you spit on your fellow man like that.

Disgusting, but not that surprising in glorious America, the great capitalist paradise:thumbdown:
Next thing will be people who need emergency medical attention, but can't pay for it, will be left to die. "I'm shot, I'm bleeding to death!" - "Sorry, if you don't have insurance there's nothing we can do"

Don't give them any ideas. Please, our healthcare system is fucked up enough, we don't need them finding new ways to leech off the poor. I swear the capitalists are no better than parasites, leeching off the poor and whoever else they can latch onto.

That reminds me of how Gracchus (the roman triumvir, not Baboeuf) became so fabulously wealthy; he ran a private fire service, and would offer to buy out people's lands and/or property at any asking price or his fire crews would just stay around and watch.

He ended up being the single largest and wealthiest slumlord in Rome. I have no doubt that we'll see enterprising capitalists trying this shit over time. Cartels, too, maybe, to make sure the prices are fixed: it's not like a fire brigade doesn't require some capital to set up.

I remember reading about a similar incident earlier this year (in the same state I believe). Another example of capitalism at its finest.

...just....*heavy sigh* fuck me

How can anyone think that something as fundamental as protection from fire should be paid for? And the point made about 'if their lives were in danger' they'd step in... So, it was just their property and possesions being burnt, who cares?
The Right go on and on and on about the importance of private property and wealth, that's why they bleet like frightened sheep the second the government considers taxing them a bit more than they'd like ("That's MY money, MY property, hands off!"). but when it's just some hick in a trailer park, their possesions are of less value and significance, let it burn.
Sickening on a number of levels. :(

Yes, you're right, its actually kind of a privilege to be on a leftist forum. If you try debating someone on facebook you'll find out what kind of person actually debates on it. Libertarian capitalists are truly disgusting people. Not as dangerous as fascists, but almost as disgusting sometimes. In all seriousness, why is it that you have to pay for services from the fire department.
