So I was in Honduras today, where I had a date with a female human from the area. At the end thereof, she asked me a question I did not understand. The conversation went something like this (grammatical errors included):
Her: ¿Somos compromisos?
Me: "¿Somos compromisos?"
Her: Sí, ¿somos compromisos?
Me: No entiendo. Sé dos definiciones de "compromiso"; la primera es cuando dices que vas a hacer algo en el futuro, y la segunda es sobre una boda.
Her: (laughs) ¡Una boda, no! ¡Otra definicion!
This went on likewise for a moment more; she was very persistent in asking if we were "compromisos - ¿tu y yo?"
...Any idea what that means? I don't think I'm engaged...

I just wanted to say that I am really impressed by your first sentence, "So I was in Honduras today"!
I found an on-line definition of "compromiso" at http://www.wordreference.com/es/en/translation.asp?spen=compromiso, but, honestly, I have no idea what she is talking about, either

I was born in Mexico, with Spanish being my first language, and I have no fucking clue as to what she could possibly mean. That said, my English is actually better than my Spanish nowadays, and I haven't been to Mexico in 11 years, so there's that.

I can't seem to get passed this part of the sentence....for reasons that should be obvious...
First, are you not human yourself?
Second, do you date species other than humans?

Strikes me as an odd question. Do you not date non-humans?

isn't she just asking if you are going to be committed to each other. In other words "are we in a relationship"

The same. It sounds... delicious.

Honduran Spanish is very different from Mexican Spanish anyway. For example, if you buy something at a shop here and you're told something costs "dos," that's actually 12 lempiras (doce -> dos); if something costs 2 lempiras, they'll ask for "do" (dos -> do).
And "no me importa" is the local equivalent of "eat shit and die," whereas my Mexican-born teacher in high school taught that phrase as if it were totally innocuous.

That could make sense; there was another question along the lines of "¿somos novios?" which I had to look up in a dictionary afterward.

In my household, "woman" was used in a pejorative manner so often - frequently directed at myself - that I now shy away from using the term. In Spanish, I simply say "mujer."

I believe she was asking if you were in a relationship. Congrats, you soon get to have a DTR in Spanish!

As a Spaniard I must agree con GPDP, I have no clue what she is talking about. Maybe she's asking if you're goning to make her your girlfriend or something like that.

I took Spanish back in (Swedish) school. Our teacher was Bolivian, the other group's was Chilean. We had quite some trouble.

Portuguese is very close to spanish and I understand spanish I would say it means compromised like engaged or in a serious relationship

Eh, never mind; she's ignored my calls and texts for the last couple days, and silence is the universal language. I'm at 3 straight unanswered attempts at contact, and anything after that is approaching crazy stalker dude status.
Damn it...I'm so sick of people building my hopes up, only to smash them without a word. It hurts even more because this is the way things go EVERY SINGLE FRICKIN' TIME.

Argie here.
I guess she meant if you two are "compromiso" as in "serious". To "get serious", "committed" (but not "engaged")
My two cents bro, good luck.

Well my Honduran Spanish is VERY rusty, and I've only been there twice in my life, and neither of them were very clothe together. But from what I can remember speaking it during those two trips, she's not talking about a wedding or engagement, or anything like that. If I'm remembering correctly.
I'm mainly going to have to go with my fellow first language Spanish speakers, and say I'm not really sure what the hell she's saying, but I'm pretty sure a wedding and engagement are NOT what she's hinting at. She's probably just asking if you two are good together, and what you think?
And maybe don't call her again, actually go to her place or whatever? I dated a woman from Guatemala once, and she kind of did the same thing. Didn't take my calls, so I had to go talk to her in person.

One of the texts she's ignoring is one where I answered her question, though. (My phone can send texts and receive both texts and phone calls, but cannot make calls). I even had two Hondurans vet what I was saying before I sent.

Her apartment is in a small complex that is walled off; I'd have to text her to let her know I was there, and that's proven not to work. (I also know where she works, because that's where I was introduced to her by our mutual friends - but I do NOT want to put her on the spot in public).

This...basically this.
I'm fairly certain.

I talked this over with a mutual friend, who reports that the person in question sounded really excited about the aforementioned prospect of "compromisos"; the friend was very confused at said person's silence the last couple days. This leads me to conclude that it's probably a technological problem (ie she's out of phone minutes, or she lost the phone on the bus again).

...and sure enough, the person in question has moved to San Pedro Sula, which is about a 53-minute bus ride away. That's not too far at all if things go well - and, if things don't work out, it's just far enough.
I'll quit bothering you all with this crap now. Thank you, everybody.
