Has anyone here seen "CSA: Confederate State of America"? It's a mockumentary on if the South won the Civil War. It was pretty damn racist in my opinion, but it was supposed to be in order to get their point across. The ads in the movie are just draw dropping, especially to learn they were real. Thoughts?

Well, it was meant to show a point of a what if scenario of the CSA winning the civil war, and there is a good chance it might have ended up in that manner...so the racism is more a criticism of the CSA rather than racism for the sake of racism. Not all the commercials were real however, many of the commercials were outright false (like instead of cops they have slave catchers and so on) and several of the commercials for real products/companies (such as the restaurant) were fake due to no footage of the real commercials apparently. But the actual real commercials were incredibly disturbing to know that the USA (not CSA) had them for many years.....

I have been meaning to watch this but I wasn't sure if it was any good. Guess I will give it a go.

I saw it, wasnt that bad.

Its a bit funny beccause this hypotetical scenario make the U.S do more or less the same kind of imperialism it did when the north won, i really dont know if this was the point of the movie.

I liked the movie beccause it exposed many stupid belief the so called racial realist hold today.

Yes I believe you are correct on the second point. This documentary was really a critique on the US government by using the CSA as an allusion to them, since as you stated, the US did pretty much the same thing sans the slavery and outrright annexation of nations, preferring economic colonisation instead, as well as the general racism that the US still had into the modern era...even pointing to "uncle ben's rice" and "aunt jemimiah" as proof racism still exists in open advertising

The movie intended to show how a fictional CSA wouldn't have ended up being that different from our present day America. It was a good idea, but I think it would've made a better short film then a full length.

The movie was indeed a bit too long, a 30 min movie would have been perfect.

Agreed. I guess a drawback to shortening the film would be that it'd be easier to dismiss. If there were just a couple of the commercial interludes, the viewer could say "oh those are just isolated examples, they don't prove anything", but because there's so many included in the full length movie, it's harder to do that.

I think the length was fine for the film. They had a lot of topics to cover and breaking it up with the commercials was really good for giving it the "documentary" feel even though everything was done very tongue in cheek.

when i saw this in theaters there was a white dude laughing super loud at all the racist ads. the ones that are ultimately shown to be real. i like to think he was uncomfortable but that dude sounded like he was having a g.d. ball.

I thought it was kind of boring and way too long.
