Where can I watch old and obscure movies online? I particularly want to watch one called "Liquid Sky." Its made in the 80s by a Russian film crew that travelled to the US and its about aliens trying to score heroin, which sounds like a bizzare and hilarious premise for a plot.

It's more artsy and new wave-y than bizzare and funny.

Torrents are your friend. Download a client like Utorrent or bitlord and then go to a website like pirate bay or Demonoid and download to your heart's content.

You can find almost anything on the better torrent tracker sites, such as Demonoid.

a lot of the time old, foreign, arthouse etc. film isnt seeded enough or at all, making it impossible to torrent

not that i would ever download material protected by copyright

so a general streaming site would be nice for these kinds of movies, for research purposes only of course.

^ Don't think we're allowed to do that kind of link. Suffice to say, persistent enough searching will usually yield results, I find. Two (very very bad) examples: I watched 'August Rush' by googling it and finding a place to watch it online. The quality wasn't great, and it is probs not very legal, but you can find most stuff on the internet if you look hard enough. The film's atrocious and I only watched it to impress I girl who I liked, because I knew she liked it. Guess how that turned out  I also watched 'The Room' online (the Citizen Kane of bad movies) just by looking around for about half an hour. Again, quality was bad.

Also, especially with old films (I wouldn't say '80s is "old"), they're old enough to be in the public domain so can be found on sites like Internet Archive and so are pretty easy to get hold of (http://www.archive.org/details/movies). Often there are youtube channels which specialise in a particular genre or style of filmmaking. Mosfilm's youtube has loads of old and interesting Russian movies, if you can be patient enough to navigate the cyrillic. As others have said, torrents are cool (but obviously illegal; although the claim that they "strangling" the film industry is a bit spurious, I think). There are some torrent sites which specialise in old, foreign or avant-garde cinema.

Edit; One last option, if you're really desperate to see something, it is always worth checking amazon -- although it might seem like an obvious option -- there are often cheap DVD re-releases which would surprise you. No more than £5 including P&P for a lot of cool (or old?) or interesting films.
Another point, if you sign up for email lists of film institutes or cinema clubs etc. (I am on the BFI email list for example), then they send emails round for notable films that are touring the country and showing in pleasantly small theatres which are never that far. I have the problem of living a fairly middle-of-nowhere kind of rural area, so there's no decent cinema within 50 miles and it far too expensive and inconvenient to travel to one regularly.

Just some ideas, bit of a long post, but an important topic anyway. as others have said, you just gotta be patient in searching stuff and not give up after the second google page result. I think that half the fun is finding these old movies and probably picking up some other info or obscurity while you're at it. Happy watching!

that archive website is exactly what i was looking for thank you, also thanks for the idea about the BFI filming list! I would love to go to actual cinemas and shit like that and help the people that make movies outside of hollywood, but im skint right now (its a recurring problem tho).
