Never heard of them... the only bits that sounds familiar to me come from a street gang.

The were sort of a Puerto Rican version of the BBP and worked along side each other. They were started as a street gang but grew into a political organization. Research them, they are very interesting.

Juan Gonzalez of Democracy Now was a member and one of the main leaders in New York City.

I thought it was a sub-group of the Bullingdon Club

Aren't the young lords the children of former high ranking members of the Chinese CP who have now gained significant power via nepotism, forming a powerful faction within the party?

The Young Lords was inspired by the Black Panther Party I read somewhere (probably We want Freedom by mumia abu jamal), but as far as I knew, they turned from sorta Latin nationalism with left-wing tendencies into a street gang.

But now I just read they were a street gang who turned political.

Regardless, they were nationalist and not socialist, correct?

It was street gang > political group

I think they were socialist. Their demands and actions were definitely socialist ones. Some members also went on into Maoist groups as well I've read.

Wow. Nobody knows, but everyone is commenting.

To say that the Young lords were the "Puerto Rican version of the BPP" is simplistic, I think.

The most instructive aspect of the Young Lords is how their story ends. They somehow got co-opted into auxileries for the election of Harold Washington in his campaign for mayor of Chicago, and a bunch of their leadership got jobs at major bourgeois broadcasters and publications.

'The Young Lords Party fought for equal social and civil rights of the Puerto Rican people in NY because they were the prominent Latin culture at the time in NY. They were the pioneers that struggled for everyone else that came later...illegally. Their sacrifices and efforts opened doors of opportunities for all other Latino's.'
