Remember that Humala is a hero for a lot of leftists...

LIMA, Peru (AP) — Peru's president has declared a 60-day state of emergency in a northern region torn by more than a week of protests against a highlands gold mine that is the country's largest investment.

President Ollanta Humala said Sunday night that protest leaders had shown no interest in reaching agreement after a day of talks with Cabinet chief Salmon Lerner and three other ministers.

Lerner's group was accompanied by Peru's military and police chiefs while guarded by hundreds of heavily armed police.

Local elected officials in the state of Cajamarca oppose the $4.8-billion Conga gold and copper mining project, in which U.S.-based Newmont Mining Corp. is a majority owner.

Project opponents have said they fear it will taint and diminish their water supply.

I hope the above link is of interest N H A..the pattern is always the same, whether California1849....Black Hills Dakota....here in Mindanao now further attempt are being made to open the borders to outside corporations to ease the way to more pillage and plundering of National assets. Easy pickings I was offered a gold tunnel only a few months ago...haha ..even on a train drivers pension I could comfortably afford to. Not my style or Wifey's either...besides I read a cracking good novel.."Treasure of Sierra Madre"....that would give even a greedy little minnow like me pause for thought before joining the sharks. There is a feeding frenzy here...corny old saying .."gold fever" has a lot of truth. A nephew and brother-in-law all got swept up. Not the road to riches for all. The environmental impact is truly horrendous. Well documented. Largely lawless except for red partizans they have sought to protect the people's livelihood, environment and general law and order. I have had little contact, but have found them to be civil, most courteous in fact, as are all young people to us oldies. Protective..making sure some old fool doesn't get into the firing line, during operations. It's the other crowd who worry me....little more than hired thugs...more than once had to dart under the kitchen table with grand children whilst 50mm opened up whistling over our roof. Of course half of them were drunk and my neighbour lost 2 goats. He got his compensation...eventually. They said in the village that the partizans were more nimble than the goats.
