Neeraj Kumar was found dead in a field

A low-caste Dalit boy has been killed in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh for sharing a name with a man of a higher caste, police say.
They said Neeraj Kumar's father Ram Sumer had been asked to change the names of two sons as they were the same as those of Jawahar Chaudhary's sons.

The body of Neeraj, 14, was found on 23 November in a field. Two friends of the Chaudhary family have been arrested.

Mr Chaudhary denies the involvement of his family in the murder.
He says the family is being framed by police.

Dalits, formerly known as "untouchables", are at the bottom of the Hindu caste system in India.

Although caste discrimination is illegal, biases remain in many areas.

The latest incident took place in Radhaupur village in Basti district.
Both Ram Sumer and Jawahar Chaudhary have sons named Neeraj and Dheeraj and that has long been an issue between the two families, Sub-inspector Praveen Kumar said.

Mr Chaudhary, who belongs to a higher caste, had given several warnings to Mr Sumer to change the names of his boys.

On 22 November, Neeraj left home after dinner to watch television at a friend's house. His body was found the next day.

Police said he was strangled.

Mr Chaudhary's sons - Neeraj and Dheeraj - are missing, but police have arrested two friends of the family who they say had a role in the murder.

The Naxalites often protect the Dalits, tribal men & women, and other exploited people from abuse by the ruling class and the state, but their territory / control is limited so there is only so much they can do.

Yes.

Yes it is common, and its fucking tragic. And many, many cases aren't reported widely. It should also be said that many Brahmins reject casteism and the majority don't go out murdering untouchables. But there is a deeply entitled group of traditionalists who would do something like this.

This happened in UP though, which is ruled by a Dalit-rights populist party, so there's a reasonable chance that this man will be "brought to justice". The problem in much of India is legal impunity, and that goes both for acts of violent discrimination and everyday crime and corruption.

The tribal areas which the Naxalites dominate don't always have the same kind of demographic makeup. The tribals are regarded as outcasts like the Dalits but since they live in remote areas there are not many high-caste people in some of their towns. From what I understand about the social structure in that part of India, Brahmins don't always like to live in those areas because there is no need for the traditional priest caste as the tribals have both their own religious practices and languages.

This is depressing. India must be really corrupt if this happens regularly

Well, it is very corrupt, however more importantly it is incredibly underdeveloped. There's simply not enough infrastructure. Massive portions of the country are barely covered with basic services and are dominated by nepotistic elites, and the government is flawed.

India really is a land of contradictions (which makes sense considering its size and diversity). It is at once growing incredibly rapidly, yet wracked by some of the worst poverty in the world ... but these kinds of problems are common in poorly developed countries. Tanzania has a huge problem with the murder of albinos for witchcraft, and China has privately owned black prisons in Beijing where corrupt politicians imprison petitioners, so corruption and under-deveopment allow for serious problems to fester in many countries with India's level of development. So it's not like India's especially atrocious. But it does feature a few particularly stark cases of brutality and social violence.
