Is the UN a joke? The UN says no to war on Iraq, but wat the fuck..... we'll blow em up anyway.

I created this topic to find out what everyone on Che Lives thinks about the UN... not just the fools with tunnel vision i discuss politics with everyday.

the fools with tunnel vision

 good one!

Anyway, I believe that the UN is utterly useless, considering how many times the US has ignored it. That's why I usually refer to it as "The Neo League of Nations".

The UN has no real power... the power is in the Security Council, which is dominated by the imperialist powers of the U.S., UK, France, Russia, and China...

The liberals who champion the "international law" of the UN are naive at best... the powers on the Security Council are only interested in their economic, political, and military self-interest...

That said, I support the "involve the UN" measures that liberals use as alternatives to the unilateral, militaristic ideas of neo-conservatives like the Bush Administration... I figure, that at least, making deals with other imperialists will slow down marches to war and prevent some where the imperialists are unable to cut a proper deal...

these countries are also the biggest of power-abusers in the world.

I fully agree with MiN.

Furthermore, the US doesn't care if the UN gives it's blessing to an operation. But if the UN supports an operation, it provides a moral support. It's used to boost the moral of the troops and population. This goes ofcourse for each of the Imperialist Nations within the Security Council.

A countervote of the UN could lead to some protest under the civil population and low moral under the troops. On the contrary a high moral under the oponents. Like in Iraq.

Although I agree with what has been said about the U.N.s military impotence when dealing with the interests of the major powers, it does have its uses.

The U.N. is often the first to offer aid or help in disaster areas or war zones. Famine relief and cleanup operations after major natural disasters are of great importance - and few charity organisations can beat the U.N. in terms of scale of aid. (This does not deter however, from the fantastic work which these charities do do worldwide...) The U.N. is also instrumental in policing many conflict zones across the whole globe. U.N. peacekeepers have been active in Sierea Leone for many years now. This is of vital importance. The U.N. has also championed many sensible campaigns on an international level. The campaign to ban landmines for example.

No-one can deny that the U.N. has its uses; it's just a shame that it is dominated by the wrong nations and ideologies at the moment.

its heading in the same direction the League of Nations went
it amounts to nothing, especially when dealing with the U.S.
its just pointless bickering and *****ing

they need to have stricter restrictions for the nations that are members
not just "We don't support you."
need some action here
they need to intervene with U.S. operations

The UN is merely a cover for the brutality of the capitalist and imperialist nations we have on the earth...no use at all.

2 things...

Does anyone think the UN should be abandoned all together??? Or should reformation of the UN's policies be made to make the smaller nations' voices heard to?

I was reading in a leftie newspaper (the Gaurdian) that there were rallies to end UN "colonialism" in Kosovo... has anyone else heard about this?

is this the Gaurdian from Sydney Australia??? (thats the one i was talking about) but i have read a few more issues and i agree, it is quite shockingly nuetral, if not right...

But how do you think the UN should be abandoned, and what should there be in place of it, if anything?

I believe we need an international board of leaders to help give aid, advice and support to troubled places, but as to whether or not the UN does this effectively is another issue. And there must be MUCH harsher re-purcussions for nations who go against the the UN... However the security council is a load of shite, as someone mentioned before, it is a bunch of imperialistic old fools who can sway the UN in any direction they please.....

I'm interested in EVERYONE'S opinions, please share them

The UN is diplomatic horse shit. It's observer's role in modern conflicts is as redundant as it's non-confrontational environmental policies. Horse shit.

no worries TavreeshKamo,

SuffianR, you mentioned things about the UN's role as an observer in modern conflicts, but what about all the interventions they've made in struggling countries, like Sierra Leone, and Kosovo? Also, could you refer me a few sites about the UN's "non-confrontational environmental policies"? I would like to know more about these policies...

but i really want to hear about what people think we should do about the UN... WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?
