View Full Version : Horse meat legal in US!!! *om nom nom*

Horse slaughter plants are legal again in the United States. Restrictions on horse meat processing for human consumption have been lifted.
In a bipartisan effort, the House of Representatives and the United States Senate approved the Conference Committee report on spending bill H2112, which among other things, funds the United States Department of Agriculture. On November 18th, as the country was celebrating Thanksgiving, President Obama signed a law, allowing Americans to kill and eat horses. Essentially, one turkey was pardoned in the presence of worldwide media while in the shadows, buried under pages of fiscal regulation, millions of horses were sentenced to death.
Horse slaughter has been prohibited in the United States as funding for inspections of horses in transit and at slaughter houses was non-existent. This worked because the horse meat cannot be sold for human consumption without such inspections. The House version of the bill retained the de-funding language and the Senate version did not. The conference committee charged with reconciling the two opted to not include it. The result is that it is now legal to slaughter horses for humans to eat.
Notwithstanding that 70% of Americans oppose horse slaughter, that President Obama made a campaign promise to permanently ban horse slaughter and exports of horses for human consumption (horses can be sent to Mexico and Canada), that documentation of animal cruelty, slaughterhouse stench, fluid runoff and negative community impact exists, it is taxpayers that will bear the costs!
Wyoming state representative Sue Wallis and her pro-slaughter group estimate that between 120,000 and 200,000 horses will be killed for human consumption per year and that Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Georgia and Missouri, are considering opening slaughter plants.
During these trying times, is the only thing that Democrats and Republicans can agree on is that Americans need to eat horses?

WOOOTTT!!!
One of my many goals in life is to try both horse meat and dog meat. for the record I am not being sarcastic, the only reason I linked to a anti-horse meat article was because it was the first one I read about it

The article stinks of rank hypocrisy. Horse meat has been available in France for years, and French society hasn't collapsed. Odds are good that the writer of the article happily tucks into the flesh of chickens, cows and pigs.

I remember, when I was a kid, the outrage at Swedish McDonalds using horse meat in the hamburgers. Oh the lulz.

Horse meat is available here in Serbia too, and it's delicious, but expensive.
I seriously despise carnivores who divide animals in "cute" and "not cute" category. If you eat meat, you eat meat - killing and eating a pig is no different than killing and eating a horse, a dog or a kangaroo.

I've had it twice, but I didn't really like it. Both times it was raw. How do they eat it in other countries?

This is one of the things that annoys me most about some people who eat meat. It just seems really inconsistent to eat a cow and then be horrified that some people eat horses.

To be fair while I also oppose ranking animals (other than endangered) cows seem barely more self aware than vegetables

Apparently horses aren't exactly intelligent creatures either. So what's horse meat like? We legalized it in Western Australia a while ago and nobody really gave a shit.

France, Catalonia and Malta among many other eat horse and they do fine. A friend of mine try it at Malta and said it was really good.
A funny thing thou is that the people from the USA have this hypocrisy in wich animals are good to eat, and wich not. Cow=good, horse=bad, rabbit=you're a freaking monster.

A south american friend of a friend made herself famous in Amsterdam when she walked in a pet store and when the store clerk asked here how many guinea pigs she wanted answered "une kilo"

Basashi is a kind of horsemeat sashimi. Raw, it's referred to as sakuraniku (cherry blossom meat), because of its very pink color. You can also find baniku (horsemeat) grilled in places that serve yakiniku.
Some cultures develop a taboo about eating certain animals that they categorize as pets, companions, or helpers. I can understand that. What seems more baffling to me is taboos about eating certain parts of an animal; the brain or lungs or intestines. I'm not sure how or why that happens.

I personally didn't make it, but yes it was battered and deep fried for sure.
This was years ago, in 2008, I think. I tried a few bites and it wasn't for me.

Eating horse meat is kinda not smart because the only horses that get to the slaughterhouse are old and worn out ones and it's not too good to eat something that's been accumulating different toxins for years...
Horses are also cool, can be used for riding and ploughing and cart-pulling and what not so it'd be better if people just sticked with pigs and cows...

I think the intestines are understandable, because they are involved in processing feces, and even if they are throughly washed, there is still a connection in most peoples mind

Lamb brain is ok, a little bit like jelly. Lungs and Intestines are the main ingredients in chorizo. Kidnnies are awful, and liver is ok. What i have never try are the gonads, i think that's where I draw the line, well that and eyes.

American society is oddly obsessed with horses and dogs. Symbols of "freedom" I guess... something to do with "taming the west" or some shit.

According to Wikipedia the taboo against horse meat is common in both the US and UK, and the taboo eating dogs seems to be common in almost all western countries, and quickly developing in many Asian countries

They really are.
I own a horse and i say due to the overpopulation of horse rescue centers in the southwest this would really quell their population(in a good way). And no i'm no hick, i just enjoy riding horses. But this law could also lead to well... horse theft. (to sell for their expensive meat, usually about 1000$ per horse sold to a slaughter house, varies from size to size.)
