Its been a while since we had one of these threads and I just wrote a piece on the subject, though there's lots more (I only went over ten.) I'll start off with those to get the ball rolling:

Saw the thread title was going to say Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. Also, A Perfect Circle's cover of The Nurse Who Loved Me by Failure is great. Not sure it's better than Failure's but it's worth a mention.

Always rated The Stranglers cover of Dionne Warwick's Walk on by as one of the best covers ever. It brings a whole new meaning to the lyrics without actually changing them (much if at all)

Doye O'Dell did the original Blue Christmas, which doesn't seem to be on the internet, somehow.
Anyways, Elvis' was way better.

I used to think that Bobby Fuller did the original too but it was The Crickets.

I'd say 'Louie Louie' by The Kingsmen.
It's one of those covers that was so well done that most people think it was the original version. But it was 1st done back in the late 50's as a doo-wop number.

Much respect to Toots for giving us the music, just those who came later added a new energy to his tunes.

Perhaps controversially, I prefer José González's version of "Heartbeats" to that of The Knife, though both are excellent.

I like a lot of the covers that Tori Amos has done over the years.
