Polish Prime Minister Leszek Miller, on an official visit to Iraq, has paid tribute to the first Polish soldier killed in action.

He told Polish troops their mission was essential for the reconstruction of Iraq, despite being costly, painful and "not yet understood" by many people.

The US military has confirmed that one of its soldiers shot dead the mayor of a highly volatile Baghdad district.

Mohannad Gazi al-Kaabi, who was appointed by the US authorities to run the largely Shia Muslim area of Sadr City in Baghdad, died on Sunday.

Baghdad -- A Moss Beach man working as a contractor for the U.S. Army in Iraq has mysteriously disappeared while driving along an isolated road north of the country's violence-plagued Sunni Triangle.

His employer is Ultra Services, a company based in Istanbul that furnishes supplies and logistics help for U.S. Army bases in Iraq.

A US intelligence official has confirmed to the BBC that a new report by the CIA warns that the Iraq resistance appears to be gathering strength because of a lack of clear progress by the US-led coalition.

The classified document - first reported by the Philadelphia Enquirer newspaper - warns that Iraqis are losing faith in the US-led coalition and are supporting the Iraqi resistance in growing numbers.

I'm thinking more of afghanistan... The soviet version that is.. with important differences

Soviet version: - well trained and disciplined army - a real ideological cause - not surrounded by enemies - reasonably close to the motherland - a very backward nation to occupy.

Lets see now... Soviets lasted 7 years and lost 15000 .. I wonder how long the yanks will last.
