I was raised to see waking up early as a healthy habit befitting of a proper man. thanks to some remarks from my parents', it seems as if I'm also programmed to think of waking up late as a show of weakness or at least of lack of discipline. throughout my life, I have felt good whenever I manage to get up early and get things done before school/work, Nd bad whenever I sleep in or wake up late in the weekend.
what are your opinions on waking up early? is it a virtue or unnecessary torture?

it is mostly a torture in capitalist world.. think about 1 dollar waged workers per day who must wake up at 5 o clock or even work at night. I used to know such people.
it is only a virtue if you must wake up to make a revolution, wake up for the party

whats the difference of waking up early and going to sleep early than getting to sleep late and waking up late? A no oficial medical opinion of mine is that waking up early is good is bs!Not sleeping well, yes its a problem, but if you sleep good hours whatever... its the same thing even if outside is morning or afternoon

I don't have any problems getting up early, as long as I've had plenty of sleep beforehand.
Although most of the time I go to bed late, so I wake up late.

To help get me a bit more motivated in the morning I often have something hot (I prefer something non-caffeinated) and I listen to some music. You would be surprised about how well routine works for waking up;it really does make the whole process a little less tortuous.

I don't mind getting up early if it means that I can have a walk with dogs, watching morning cartoons and shit like that. Having to get up early, rushing for the morning train and starting work early so I can get home in the evening tired and hungry is kinda a torture tho. Well, right now I'm unemployed so don't have early mornings problems. That means that i have money problems tho.

I naturally get up early. Perhaps its a virtue, and maybe its a curse. But either way, just do what's convenient for you.

Well with my job, and the way my classes are positioned in the days, I don't necessarily have to wake up that early. I usually wake up around 10am.

Waking up early is a natural thing for our bodies. Humanity has waked up with the Sun for millenia.
As a currently unemployed late riser, I miss it.

It's a virtue, when you need to be at the picket line by 6. ;)

It's torture. If I don't have to do anything or whatever then I don't like waking up til late in the afternoon. I even sleep until it's night. Sure I have no problem waking up early, but don't like doing it.

Waking up is indeed a sign of lacking discipline. I should know.

I always wake up at 6:30, lay in bed for a half an hour
Is there any way to be motivated?

Saturday go to sleep at 6am, sunday wake up At 2pm… 8 hours slept: mission accomplished. Duration is what matters, that is all.

I'm terrible at waking up in the morning - it's often 10-20 minutes of lying there half-asleep, then 10-20 minutes of sitting up on the edge of my bed half-asleep. I often go to bed far past midnight and wake up usually between 8am and 10am. Ideally, I would like to have a much more regular, seven-hour sleep schedule, perhaps 12.30am to 7.30am.
Things I've tried in the past include turning my computer off a few hours before I go to bed and read for a while, drinking peppermint or camomile tea in the evening and actually not staying up late into the night as I often do.

I hate waking up early, though, I find it much easier to do when it's with my girlfriend. Getting up alone is ass, so I just sleep as long as possible.

Im a total nightowl. I usually dont go to bed till about 4am (give or take an hour). I would usually wake up at about 12 and go to work an hour later. Sometimes I wake up early if I have something to do, but I hate this. Im lucky that my job requires me working 1pm to about 10pm as it suits the time I like to sleep. On the otherhand I miss out on every evening and that blows when you want to watch football etc..
In my previous job I had to start work at 7am and I absolutely hated this. I used to go to bed at 1am, get up at 6am, be at work for 7am, finish work at 5pm and go to sleep on the couch till about 8pm. My bodyclock was fucked.

I agree. My GF is a school teacher so I end up waking with her in the morning sometimes and that is my only motivation to wake.

I hate people that wake up early and disturb my sleep.
When I wake up early, no matter how much I have slept, I feel the need to go back to sleep. It's kind of an issue when I have morning classes.. luckily my earliest class this semester has been at 11.

I do enjoy being awake in the early morning as long as I can just hang around and enjoy it, but getting up early for work is awful. For years I had to wake up before 5AM for work and I can honestly say it was one of the worst experiences of my life. Since I was only getting a few hours of sleep a night I was often ill and always tired and irritable. It also pretty much killed my social life.
I love the feeling of rising with the sun and relaxing with a cup of coffee before I go about my business for the day but getting up an hour before the sun rises to go to a job that I hate pretty much amounts to psychological torture.

Going up early is something I do due to being forced to by society. Abolish early mornings, I say!

Due to my job, my sleeping patterns are erratic at best. (My shifts can start at any time from 6am right through to midnight, although a 9pm start is most common for me.) I prefer working nights to days. When I'm not working, I usually stay up late and wake up between 2 and 4 in the afternoon. I'm a night person, except when forced not to be.

over the past year or so ive been trying to push myself back into early mornings and early nights. as much as i love the night, you cant really get much done. i do admit that i LOVE night driving. especially with good tunes.
but yeah, right now im getting up at 7 am, work at 10:30-9:00pm and bed at around midnight. today was a day off though so i got up at around 10. work up at 9 though.

My job has conditioned me to stay up late and wake up late. It's common for me to wake up around 2-3 pm on my days off. I don't really care, nothing of interest happens for me in the hours between 5 am and 3 pm, I often find when I do wake up early I get bored way too fast and want to nap until late afternoon.
Sometimes my job will pull a complete reversal and make me work 7am - 5pm, and that is just complete torture for me. It seems like the free time away from work goes by faster on weekdays, you can't stay up late and socialize or do other activities, and the weekends feel like they are cut off short since sunday is speant dreading going to bed early and doing it all over again.

I think the only health issue involved is getting enough sleep. When I had a shrink, she once told me that adequate sleep improves all the cognitive functions. I never had the maturity to go to bed early, and for nine years I commuted to a job in another state, traveling 100 miles a day, so I was kind of a zombie at work. On the West Coast, from what I hear, the commutes are even longer. Marx was right, Kapitalismus sux.

I wake up around 3am to get to work on time by 3:30. It's like stepping out into a whistling void that only gets more horrific as the day progresses because I'm at work. If I were camping I'd love to get up at 3am and watch the day begin. I also like weird hours so long as I'm having fun. I guess the plus side is that when starting work that early I get off and have a lot of daylight left. Except I live in Cascadia where it's always grey.
