I just watched the prequel/remake of The Thing with my wife. She vomited but I think that might've been then pizza. I wasn't too impressed either (with the pizza and the movie). It just doesn't work that well as a prequel with the other film from 82. We're just watching that now and it's still a classic.

at a loose end last night and went with a friend to see In TIme - LOL terrible film!!!!

Spent most of the film sniggering .... how can a girl who looks like bambi [amanda seyfried] rapidly run over roof tops [not flat..] along uneven dusty roads in 7 inch heels whilst being dragged by the hand by Justin Timberlake???????

That's the thing, I think the reactions the people have in the 82 version to be way more realistic. This new one is really bad. Here, I'll list what happens:

We are introduced to everyone. They find alien. Everyone dies. Left with two people for half the film. It doesn't build up enough of the paranoia that made the previous one good.

I watched In Time recently with Justin Timberlake (I think). I have no idea what to make of it. It's pretty much a preachy anti-capitalist movie except.... and this is where I lost it in the film, there's no money. Everyone has been genetically engineered to stay at the age of 25 and they all have this glowing count down clock on their arm. When they turn 25, they get one free year and after that they have to get a job and they get paid in time. And so they also pay for things in time. Labour time anyone? And if they run out of time, they die. But, you then see people with thousands of years on their arms (the capitalists) and I have no idea how they managed to acquire that if these are basically labour vouchers.... like, it's not explained how you can invest time and gain interest on time in the film... maybe I'm thinking about it too hard...

Anyway, it's pretty much a cheesy b-movie sci-fi dystopian film where everyone is young and good looking. A bit like a less classy Logan's Run.

On TV, recently watched 'The National Anthem' the first in a trilogy of dark, twisted modern fables called 'Black Mirror'. Only available in the UK, I think, but highly recommend you download it. Brief synopsis: Princess is kidnapped, a video ransom demand appears on YouTube stating that she will be executed unless the Prime Minister has live, un-simulated sex with a pig, broadcast to the world, at 4.30pm that day.
Sounds pretty crude and stupid, which it is I guess, but very funny and oddly moving towards the end.

It was okay, I guess. It's better than recent big budget sci-fi garbage like I, Robot for instance. The plot was a little ham fisted in places but I guess it's perversely more interesting if you're watching it as a marxist with a marxist friend. I watched it with my wife and we were arguing through it about how it would function with her explaining it to me and me still not understanding.

the heels[ my only ingrained memory]
the portrayal of women?
the fact that everyone in it was wearing very expensive clothes and looked like a model- in the case of the women under weight
why was amanda seyried in that bedroom scene in her under wear while justin timberlake was fully clothed???

full on hollywood nonsense

I admit that it was nonsense, but the sort of nonsense that you can sit back and laugh at. The high heels part was the funniest thing I have ever seen. How is she running like that in the film? It's beyond belief. If you're going in to see a Justin Timberlake movie then you really shouldn't be expecting anything apart from flashy trash.

"Wild Country" on youtube. It's a free werewolf movie.

and it's horrible- it doesn't even have the suspense that dog soldiers had (which was all that movie had). We need a god damned suspense-only werewolf movie that's truly horrifying. The special fx in these werewolf movies sucks. I'd rather see a werewolf that's something like this http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTbzBKF3hm1PjziToD6Xp1Y69ccpPSfJ mEqqq5o7s6hSj6Pt1RAhkqnKmU7 (from the movie quarantine) than the stupid giant dogs they use in these stupid fucking movies.

I mean imagine this http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTbzBKF3hm1PjziToD6Xp1Y69ccpPSfJ mEqqq5o7s6hSj6Pt1RAhkqnKmU7 running on all fours towards you. That's fucking terrifying. What isn't terrifying at all is this http://anythinghorror.files.wordpress.com/2010/06/werewolf2.jpg

Rewatched Dr. Strangelove. Kubrick's satire of mutually assured destruction remains a high water mark of cinematic dark comedy. A cowboy shouting "wahoo!" as he rides a nuclear bomb to mass destruction pretty much sums it up. Peter Sellers' three roles are each funny in different ways. Best quotes: "You're talking about mass murder, General, not war!" and "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here! This is the War Room!"

Antonioni's The Eclipse (it has an Italian name but I'm too lazy to imdb it). I enjoyed it for the most part although I did think that it could have cut out like 20 minutes and still maintained the style and tone of the piece. Also the strange bourgeoise racism that cropped up threw me a little.

Fo sho...

you have good taste. what did you think of mesrine? and trollhunter is a great flick i saww it in a theater which was awesome

Thanks for that.:D As you can see I went through a brief phase of watching a bunch of crime/heist flicks. Even the Godard movie, Bande à part, was ostensibly one, though it turned out to focus more on a love triangle.

Anyway, both Mesrine flicks were good. It's almost beyond belief, but even though they ran at a total of roughly four hours between them, they moved along at a pretty decent clip. I never really felt bogged down or whatever. In fact, if I had one criticism it would be that there wasn't enough done in terms of depth of character... But they work rather well as high stakes crime dramas which was what I was after. Plus if you've seen any of Cassel's other French language work you know he's pretty good at playing a nutty fucker, which he does to good effect here.

At any rate, I just saw that Iranian flick A Separation this evening. Up and down just a brilliant film. Well written, but especially well acted... And before anybody goes accusing me of going to see it just because it "got nominated," I've been trying to see this damned thing for like a month now but it keeps flitting in and out of the East Bay theatres. I can't stress enough how much everyone needs to watch that film...

BTW, has anybody seen United Red Army? It sounds like the Japanese version of Baader Meinhoff Komplex, but I can't help but wonder about the accuracy...

Wakamatsu Koji the director of United Red Army had a long time association with the Sekigun (in fact he was denied a visa when the American Cinematheque invited him to the US for their "Japanese Masters of Outlaw Cinema" series in the 90s because of his connection to a terrorist organization.) The movie is accurate to the extent that any re-creation can be. I thought it was better than Baader Meinhoff Komplex. Wakamatsu's other movies are really good. He's made around 100 movies and started as a director of soft core pink movies with a political-avant garde edge. I've been able to see 15 of them.

Yeah, I knew some of that about Koji... that he was considered one of the better directors to come out of the pink film genre and that he had an association (some sources simply referring to him as a member) with the Sekigun. Of course, being that close to the subject matter can in and of itself can often lead either to romanticizing or being unfairly disparaging, which was why I asked. I hadn't read the story about him being denied the visa, though. I figure I'll see it then, maybe some of his other work if I find it's any good (to now I haven't seen anything he's done I don't think).

The other two (or was it three; I can't recall) I've seen are hokey by comparison. I just wish the subtitles weren't so shitty... my roomies and i have been sick the last couple days, so got a lot of movie watching in....

'black gold' about coffee farmers in ethiopia and how the major players in the coffee market and first world generally (wto) fuck them over. well done and really makes you feel for the plight of the coffee farmers, especially when you seen scenes of yuppies drinking at starbucks.

'ice station zebra' cool cold war suspense sub movie with some big name actors from the late 60s. it was labelled at 'action' film but was definitely more 'who is the bad guy? will they make it through the ice? oh shit here comes the commies...' suspense. well done, and has the cool intro, intermission and exit musical pieces which i enjoy.

'restrepo' documentary that follows us soldiers in afghanistan deployed in the korengal valley, one of if not the most dangerous in that war. some powerful scenes and really a testament to what an extreme waste the entire war is.

'if a tree falls' documentary about the earth liberation front and specifically the case of daniel mcgowan. agree or disagree with the elf's actions and politics i think the film does a great job showing how those things happened and what an absurdity the prosecution of these activists as 'terrorists' is. in the special features they talk about the conditions where mcgowan is held in the 'communication management unit' for 'terrorists' which is pretty infuriating.

'my crasy life' documentary with fictionalized bits about samoan gangsters in early 90s la. had a weird structure and nothing much happening, didn't end up finishing it.

watched some more but i can't remember because i am getting old

Saw the new Episode of the Walking Dead it was good up until the end, then it took a nosedive to say the least *Major Spoilers*,

There were so many things wrong this episode. First off the decision to kill off Dale at the end of the last episode, and then kill off Shane at the end of this episode was really really bad idea, because it reduces the shock of Shane's death. If they wanted to kill off both characters, they should have found away to connect their deaths, or at least had Dale be killed by Shane, which would have solved of the dual purpose of killing off Dale and clarifying Shane's insanity and making his attempt to kill Rick less out of nowhere. Also on the subject of Shane's death it made no fucking sense, if Rick wanted to kill him then why not shoot Shane when Shane was giving him the chance, rather then wait until Shane is surrendering and then stabbing him.

The next thing that is wrong is the whole idea that people can become zombies without being bit, this is major thing and yet it comes out of nowhere, a few episodes back they did find the dead guards with no bite marks, but one the character said that they could have been scratched by a zombie, which fits with zombie lore so as a foreshadower the whole guard thing was pointless. So there is nothing leading up to Shane coming back as zombie, and it seems he only came back as a zombie for no other reason then for Rick's son to shoot him, On that topic a.) what the fuck was that kid doing out there b.) why the fuck was Shane planning to murder Rick in viewing distance from the farmhouse. This makes even less sense because Shane specifically took Rick out into the woods to kill him, yet he waits until they are out of the woods and can clearly see the farmhouse and then decides to pull a gun on Rick. For point A it is clear the producers wanted to show that Rick's son's loyalty lay with Rick and not Shane. However not only is this forced like hell, it doesn't make sense. The scene tried to do the whole trope of "looking like you are going to shoot somebody, but really shooting the threat that is coming up behind them" but when Rick's son first pulls a gun on Rick, Shane is not a zombie yet, also we see the zombie Shane walking towards Rick and it is obvious what is going to happen. If they wanted to make the scene a surprise they should not have shown zombie Shane and instead just showed Rick's son firing, leading the audience to believe he shot his father, but then showing Rick unhurt and panning the camera out to see a dead zombie Shane collapsing to the ground, it would still have been cliché but at least the cliché would have been done right.

Finally where the hell did all the zombies come from at the end, it may explain it in the next episode, but I have a sneaking suspicion that the producers wanted to end the season with a big action scene.
I actually thought this show was getting better, I even thought this episode was going good, until the end which failed on so many levels.

Thanks for the link comrade, gave it a watch through last night. Might have been pretty tired but I found the documentary itself to be lacking; it seemed more like a lecture to educate than a piece of cinema to inspire. The aliens are electricity based and can be detected by throwing electric devices (that don't function due to the alien effect but close proximity brings them back to activity) like cellphones.

I kinda like this movie its not the best but its certainly entertaining.
Reminds me of 28 days later and the chilling effect of seeing moscow abandoned is very similar to the way london looked in 28 days later.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does scope mean? I am looking for a version with subtitles, I know no Spanish.

"Scope" is cinephile shorthand for designating a movie in a larger than 1.85 aspect ratio. The aspect ratio refers to the width of the screen. Movies made before 1954 had a 1:33 aspect ration.

Starting in 1953 in order to compete with television film industries all over the world tried different technical innovations to keep audiences in theaters. 3-D was one example, and wide screen movies another. There were two popular wide screen formats that used an anamorphic lens, CinemaScope and Panavision. CinemaScope made its appearance first so anamorphic wide screen movies were labeled scope movies no matter the company.

By 1959 the standard aspect ratio became 1.85 (for Hollywood and Japanese movies; for European movies 1.66,) a compromise between 1.33 and 2.4.

Libertarias was shot in the 2.4 aspect ratio so if you see it in any other aspect ratio the sides of the frame will be cut off or the image will be "panned-and-scanned." The subtitled DVD version I saw was simply cropped and so a lot of visual information was lost.

Watched Codes of Gender

"
The Codes of Gender is the brainchild of MEF Executive Director, Sut Jhally. Jhally wrote and directed this feature documentary about sociologist Erving Goffman’s seminal work on advertising. The role that advertising plays in shaping our understanding of the masculine and the feminine.
Using brilliant visual cues, The Codes of Gender allows Goffman a wide canvas for distilling his main analysis: that gender ideals are not biological, but rather ritualized cultural normatives. The ‘masculine’ and the ‘feminine’ are social constructs that are highly influenced by modern advertising.
It looks (http://documentarystorm.com/the-codes-of-gender/#) beyond advertising as a medium that simply sells products, and beyond analyses of gender that focus on biological difference or issues of objectification and beauty, to provide a clear-eyed view of the two-tiered terrain of identity and power relations. Though it was only 27 minutes long it was a wonderful movie to rewatch. The last time I saw it was when I was little so it was fun to hear all the rhyming and songs.I forgot how great these Doctor Sues movies were.

Recommendation: Moderate

Rating: G

If you haven't, you should check out the new horton hears a who movie; by far my favorite kids movie ever.

watched "a canterlot wedding" yesterday, a really good and kick-ass ending for the season, felt really disney inspired but in a good way. only complaint it was to short and therefore it felt rushed at certain times. beyond that some of the best cartoon stuff i've seen in years.

I've been watching I, Claudius (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zr1oJj0Iivw) and I highly recommend it, they really don't make 'em like they used to. The whole series is on youtube.

It follows the future Emperor Claudius and his family starting with the reign of the first Emperor Augustus, played by Brian Blessed. Augustus's wife Livia is played by Sian Philips which is probably one of the best acting performances I have ever seen. Livia is secretly running everything behind the scenes playing people off against each other to position her son Tiberius as the next emperor. She does this by going on a killing spree murdering about 5 or 6 people, she's a proper arch villain. Then you've got Tiberius who's some sort of sexual deviant and doesn't really want to be emperor but by the time he is crowned he's turned into a sex crazed rapist who turns Rome into something along the lines of Stalin's Russia, purging suspected enemies of the state. Patrick Stewart (with hair) is excellent as the captain of the guards. Then comes Caligula, the least historical of the episodes but by far the funniest. Caligula played by John Hurt believes that he's a god and thus above everyone. It's kind of funny in a way the contempt that he has for everyone even his own class who he forces into prostitution in order to fund his extravagant ventures. Then you've got the reign of Claudius which focuses on his relationship with his new very young wife Messalina. By this point you've think you've seen almost everything that the Roman ruling class has to offer, but when she utters the line "I want to be Livia to your Augustus" I thought "aaawww shit here we go again". She's a wanna be Livia who turns out to be even more evil and as it goes on I started to wish Livia was still around to deal with Messalina. Which is an amazing piece of writing, to create a villain who is completely despicable but who the viewer ends up wanting back because they become the lesser evil and if they had still been around could have prevented so much insanity.

It really is one of the best dramas ever created for television. But if you don't think you'll watch it at least search for "I Claudius Caligula Dance" for the funniest scene in the whole series.

Watched Spiderman 3.

I saw it in theaters when it came out and than got it as a promo in a PS3 but haven't watched it worth squat in the few years since I have had the disc. For not watching it for such a long time, however, it held up well.Though the ending was kinda botched the plot was suitable emotional and actiony.

Spiderman 3 is a pile of shit. There's at least one villain too much, pathetic characterisation of Venom... that scene with the jazz music and Toby Maguire walking along with an emo hair cut winking at attractive women who are coming the other way is cringe-worthy. Brock was terribly cast and there was no need for Gwen Stacy. Fucking awful film; worse than Daredevil and on par with Catwoman.

Recommendation: torture material for the gulags

Lol. It's a shame because 1 and 2 weren't particularly terrible (although, personally, I think they've aged badly when they're up against the likes of Dark Knight and Thor) and Venom is such an interesting villain. It could have been so much better.

Yeah, I would say my favorite part of SP3 was the Sandman subplot... other than that though...

I thought Thor was a well made movie, one of the better superhero movies in my opinion. When I saw it I was expecting something generic but got something fun.

The first Iron Man was great as well... the second one, not so much.Am wondering about the in production third.

Yeah, same about venom.I only know his character from one of the old cartoon shows but I remember him being so much more than just a parasitic alien... dropped the ball on that big time.

'the deadly affair' 1960s british cold war spy mystery based on a john le carre story. good stuff, lots of retro goodness

'tinker tailor soldier spy' another cold war mystery but more recent, though set in the early 70s. its interesting watching a spy movie from the 60s and a spy movie set in the 60s back to back.

'went the day well?' british wwii movie about a small town in the english countryside that is secretly taken over by nazis. starts off as almost a comedy of manners and then becomes a pretty decent war flick.

'in the heat of the night' classic film from 68. a black police detective from philadelphia ends up stuck in a small mississippi town just after a murder and gets sucked in to the tensions of the era while trying to help solve the mystery. great, great movie and you gotta love the infamous slap.

'the manchurian candidate' 60s suspense flick about a brainwashed soldier trained to pull off an assassination that will put a soviet mole at the top of the us. has frank sinatra and angela lansbury for added pleasure.

'kagemusha: shadow warrior' 1980 three hour samurai epic from kurosawa about a thief who has to impersonate a dead feudal lord in 16th century japan so that his enemies won't find out and destroy his clan. lots of good stuff here, though i think a lot of it could have been paired down. still worth it.

'withnail and i' classic british comedy about alcoholic out of work actors in late 1960s london and their misadventure into the country for a vacation. hilarious and lots of great quotable lines.

'the apartment' 1960 'comedy' starring jack lemmon that is actually incredibly dark. follows one cc baxter, an aspiring office drone who lends out his apartment to his bosses for their affairs in exchange for promotions at the office. won best picture that year and i think still stands as a very entertaining and thoughtful film.

I thought it was interesting not so much in terms of it's assertions but just the comment of restricted scientific discovery, which I think is unfortunate. A lot better than some of the more inane docs on the subject on either side which always seem to get bogged down in the false dichotomy or superficial and moronic arguments and counter-arguments.

Labradford and Stars Of The Lid sampling each others back catalogue to create entirely new tracks.

The tracks are named after the US state where the band being sampled lived at that time.

"Virginia" is produced by Stars Of The Lid and samples the following Labradford tracks:
"Pico", "Battered" and "The Cipher" (all from "Labradford")
"Disremembering" (from: "Prazision")

'shadow company' film about modern mercenaries. tries to take a neutral route when i think it could have taken a more critical and interesting look. some of the assholes have funny stories though.

'it always rains on sunday' british noir about an escaped convict who seeks shelter with his former lover, who is now married and has a family. has some good subplots on top of the interesting main story, good flick from 1949.

'secrecy' about the birth and growth of us government secrecy. interviews from people on both sides of the issue but definitely seems to lean in favor of those opposed to how the current secrecy state operates.

This week I have watched ''Leon''(1994) ''The Killer''(1989) and Nikita(1990)

Leon is by far one of the greatest films I have ever seen, and allow me to say I have seen many films.I have say this week I feel overjoyed because I genuinely believed that because ''Clockwork Orange'' blew me away 5 years ago and still to this day I would never feel truly mesmorized by a film ever again, But Leon changed that, ANYONE here in revleft who hasn't seen it WATCH IT,I still can't get over how great it was and is.

The Killer was awesome(Although I watched the dubbed version which was quite irritating ) the film was great and the ending was amazing, I wanted to see this ever since I watched Hard Boiled over 4 years ago and now i have and it DID NOT disappoint.

Nikita was another great film, It didn't really interest me in the first 10 minutes but then the film picks up and gets really interesting.
One of the best parts I can remember is when Victor The Cleaner showed up and began pouring acid on the unconscious body.

This week has been amazing precisely because I seen these three films, funny how a movie can judge a week.
