Portugal’s first general strike in a year grounded flights and shut Lisbon’s metro service as unions protested austerity measures agreed to by the government to gain an international bailout.
Lisbon’s metro will be closed until 1 a.m. tomorrow. Most flights departing from Lisbon and Oporto were canceled, according to the website of airport operator ANA-Aeroportos de Portugal SA. State-owned train operator CP-Comboios de Portugal says it expected serious disruption.

The strike is expected to be one of the biggest in Portugal's history, where mass industrial action is rare.
The action is being supported by the two main labour unions, which represent more than a million workers.
Christmas bonuses
Many Portuguese are shocked by the scale of austerity the budget implies, says the BBC's Alison Roberts in Lisbon.
The government proposes spending cuts across a broad range of public services, including health care and the armed forces, as well as tax hikes.
Also planned is the elimination of Christmas and holiday bonuses, equal to about a month's pay for most public sector workers, and allowing private firms to extend the work day by 30 minutes without overtime pay.

Trains, metro, planes, buses, schools, hospitals, courts and all kinds of those things were shut down today.
During the strike people rallied arround a demonstration in front of the assembly wich had and still is having some confrontations with the police and people getting arrested.
Meanwhile 3 finance departments were attacked with molotov cocktails and red ink wich had never happened in Portugal so far and police say they are very worried because they suspect anarchist groups are trying to follow what was done in Italy and Greece.
Are we going Greek here?
