May have really existed. Fossils of a "sabre-toothed squirrel" have been uncovered, although it lived well in advance of mammoths and giant sloths.
Rougier named the fossil after fictional characters in the novels of Argentinian writer Julio Cortázar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cronopio), but he is well aware of its silver screen doppelgänger. "Some ridiculous-looking cartoon characters can sometimes be found later as real fossils," he says.

Of no particular import for the struggle, but thought folks might be interested so you can sound intelligent at cocktail parties.
