Uh,the last 3 months I couldn't see well in the board on my class and generally couldn't see clearly more far than 3 meters or so. So I decided to visit an optician, which I did yesterday. She was acting so ignorant and careless, but anyway she diagnosed that I have myopia and astigmatism in both of my eyes (1,25 myopia and 0,20 astigmatism in my right eye.1,75 myopia and 1 astigmatism in my left eye.) She prescribed me glasses which is what totally pissed me off. The worst is that I have to wear them everywhere not in the class which is what I expected. I asked her if I could wear contact lenses and she told me : Visit me again in 5 months and we will see. Which gave me to understand, : "Look you are going to wear glasses forever and come again here in 5 months so I can earn more money"
So what is my problem to this?
I look very nerdy in glasses but my parents insist on saying that I look awesome. I also do not believe in bullshit like : "Oh glasses fit to everyone you can have your own style".
I really do nit have any intention to sound racist but I think glasses don't fit to everyone including me. There are people who look great in glasses.I cannot imagine myself being "beatiful" with glasses.
So I thought of using contact lenses in my school and outside, but when I get home I would have no problem wearing my glasses.
The thing is that I am underage(14 years old) and don't know if I can wear contacts for my myopia. Also can you wear contacts for the first time instead of glasses? Are contacts cheaper than glasses? Does it really worth of using them?

BTW, I have not got my glasses in my hands yet, I have ordered a pair but would really hesitate wearing them because I am afraid my classmates would make fun of me.

Are contacts cheaper than glasses? Does it really worth of using them? I don't know too much about the rest but this is definitely not the case, contact lenses (even reusable ones) will end up much much more expensive than just wearing glasses. If you take your whole life as the time frame it's probably cheaper to get lazer eye surgery than wear contacts.

I haven't worn my glasses since I was 14. In public, that is. No contacts either, I just put my shallowness over my sight.

That is what I think of doing(laser). But this surgery is very expensive, and very new so I cannot be sure if it would be succesful. Moreover, i have to wait 6 years for it. I also think there are different time catogories of lenses like monthly which can cost me cheaper can't they?

If you can see well far away it is fine. But in my case I can't see shit far away without them.

I suggest not getting contacts. I used contacts and I *think* they're what messed up my eyes (I have an eye condition called "blepharitis", but don't know how I got it. I got it after I'd been using contacts for a few months). They are a huge waste of time (putting them in and taking them out), they hurt so I had to take them out every day after getting home from school, they are expensive (especially since you have astigmatism. You need special contacts if you have astigmatism), they get dull after a while, before you switch to a new pair, so you'll have to deal with blurry vision. You can mess up your eyes by making a hole (ulcer) in your cornea or getting your eye infected. They are just total shit and are for vain idiots (and for some people who need them for certain occupations, sports, etc.). So many people I know who've worn contacts have switched back completely to glasses. They are not at all worth it.
Also: DO NOT GET LASER EYE SURGERY! Laser eye surgery is still really bad and it gives lots of people "dry eye". My parents both had laser eye surgery, my dad when it was new and my mom just a year or so ago, and they both need to wear glasses still whenever they have to read something or look at a computer. This means that, if you want to be glasses-free so that you can look good at school or work, laser eye surgery might not be good enough (unless you don't read or look at computers at your school or work).
There really are good glasses options for anyone. If you think that the options for glasses that are shown to you are boring, always remember that you can get clear prescription lenses put into sunglasses frames too, which are often more interesting (but maybe more expensive). There also isn't a lot of stigma attached to wearing glasses anymore. People even wear glasses without frames.

Contacts aren't perfect, comfort-wise, though the severity of symptoms (if any) really vary from person to person. There are new ones made from silicon hydrogel which are supposed to be more comfortable, I don't really see much difference, though.
Yeah, i'd get used to wearing glasses for a few months before you get lenses, too. Make sure you wear your glasses properly and rest your eyes too, you never know, your sight might not get much worse. I started out with the same prescription as you (or similar) and an astigmatism in my left eye (annoying as fuck) and now my sight is quite a lot worse (-2.50 in the left eye, -3.25 in the right eye) because I never really stuck that close to the rules.

You will get used to the glasses over time trust me, i acted like a total 8 year old myself when i got glasses and i thought they made me look stupid, now i can't imagine myself without them.

Honestly that sounds really pathetic.

Glasses are cool I don't know what you're talking about.
Contacts are so not worth the hassle to me.

I actually like contacts, I guess I'm in the minority opinion here. I order them from Costco and they're actually not that expensive. No discomfort either, I don't even notice I'm wearing them. (except when I get an eyelash stuck between the lense and my eye, hate it when that happens)

I use contacts. I have fortnightlys. The vision quality is alot better than glasses, the world is alot bigger and brighter. Add to that the fact that glasses interfer with seals on respirators I have to wear for work and just the inconvenience of glasses in all kinds of activities I'm glad I made the switch.
I still wear glasses when Im not going out or if Im in a rush. I actually wanna get a new pair of frames that I can wear out for a change of pace.

I got glasses about two years ago. They gave me contacts at the same time, and I only wore them a couple times. Contacts are annoying as hell, take up too much time, are more expensive, and uncomfortable, IMO. If the optician gave you some glasses, they are probably ugly. Go to a cheap glasses shop and you can probably find a pair that look good on you. Here they have cheap glasses shops, they cost about $50 and you can choose from hundreds of styles. I can't picture myself without glasses now.

Nah, it is not that the glasses are ugly but they do NOT suit me!No glass in my opinion can suit me that is why I do not want to wear them and get contacts.I asked another optician if I could get contacts but she told me only after 16 years old!Fuck, wasn't that a matter of age but maturity, was it?

Hey mate! I'm 15 and wear contact lenses! I love my glasses but it's nice to be able to see out the side. I have quite bad eyesight but I would recommend getting lenses and glasses. This means you can choose depending on the occasion. I have astigmatism and am quite short sighted. Are you British? Go to Leightons if you can, they are very good, professional and know their stuff! Good luck comrade!

I'm pretty sure it's about maturity, since when you wear glasses for a long time you do get used to them no matter how much you hate them at first. Trust me i know from experience you just need to man up and deal with it glasses are nothing to be ashamed of.

This is true I had to wait till I was 14, they wouldn't let me before. Glasses are brilliant! I love my glasses but I play sport and contacts are brilliant for this. Just wait a while, get some stylish glasses and don't give a fuck about it! My glasses are part of me, I hope yours become part of you!

Glasses aren't that bad, though mine have been annoying lately. I'm getting contact lenses, but only for special occasions or events where it'd be a hassle to wear glasses. Contacts are very expensive, you'll need your parents to pay for that. Luckily I have insurance that will pay for most of a year supply (my co-pay is about $25). However, I can only go to the optician once a year- and it's then I have to decide between glasses OR contacts. But anyway, with your glasse... your classmates may point it out the first few days, maybe a few really dumb classmates will tease you, but I promise that within three days it's old news. I've been wearing glasses since I was about 8 and I'm 15 now. Most of my friends say my glasses are just a part of me now. There really are so many frames out there...I've had plenty of trial and errors with frames.
LASER: Do not get laser. Do not, do not, do not. It's a horrible idea to get laser when your young (even in your 20s, 30s, 40s) because you can only do laser so many times. With laser, you have to keep up with it...it's not a one time deal like most people make it seem, but you can only have it done so many times before it screws up your eyes. That's why most opticians only recommend laser for much older people.
Better luck just toughing it out with glasses and just wait a bit with the contacts...seems like a terrible inconvience now, but it eventually just becomes routine.

Nicely said Jennifer. But personally I think comfortable vision is worth paying a lot for. But Comrade do not get laser treatment. It costs around £2000 for the early machines, the most modern cost up to £5000 an eye and gets higher depending on how poor your eye sight is.

Thank you comrades for your answers! My parents can afford glasses but I would love to do what El Louton said but I cannot. It would be awesome if I could wear my glasses at my house and my contacts at school and outside. But I am not allowed to do so by optician's instructions! :(

Lucky! Not being British! You shouldn't go against the opticians instructions though, after all they are the professionals! Seriously man, Glasses aren't that bad! I love mine! Who gives a shit about what people think of you! Your a revolutionary leftist and loads of lefties wear or have worn glasses: Trotosky, Malcom X, Fidel Castro, Gandhi, Nehru, Lennon, Mao and many more! So don't break the tradition! Glasses are cool!

KGR, go to your optician, and get your eye exam done. Afterwards ask him what your degrees are, and what kind of contacts they'd recommend ( astygmatic, etc ) and then go online and order a box of the one timers. Look for sites without prescriptions, just make sure you find the correct degrees and type. You'll be set with a box of 30 days worth of contacts for about 25-35$, and you can actually keep them in solution to re-use them once or twice. Then just get glasses with your insurance!

Contact lenses are much more expensive (especially if you use disposables), and many people don't react to them well.
Your optometrist is actually giving you good advice. Try the glasses for awhile, get used to them, and then decide about contacts.
And trust me on this, the people that matter in your life could care less about your glasses/contacts, they just want you to see clearly.
Also, the most interesting strangers tend to find glasses kinda hot.
