So my best friend has been trying to get me to listen to this band called melt banana forever. I have never listened to any Japanese punk before so this was my first taste and truth be told I wasn't all that impressed. Now I'm not one to write off an entire nation of punk bands just because I didn't like a single band, so I was hoping that those of you in the know could throw some good Japanese punk bands at me and maybe tell me if melt banana's sound is common in Japanese punk or if its just their particular sound.

some melt banana for reference:

Punk is so crappy in general, especially Japanese punk in my opinion, that I often wonder why more people don't like stereotypical Visual Kei bands. I put it down to prejudice.

Here is one band that is both Japanese Punk and Visual Kei:

Visual Kei is almost only thing I don't like in Japan (of course, along with Japanese hippies etc.)

Japan has also really good ska scene! :)

Holy crap, that "Cobra - Captain Nippon" is legit good. I really love the way that sounds. Sounds like classic punk to me!

That song by The Stalin is decent.

Cobra's album Captain Nippon is really great. Best Oi! album from Japan - ever. This is my 2nd best song from that album:
reOB28-7eMo

Only one problem with Japanese Oi is that it's mostly nationalistic, especaily SSS (samurai spirit skinhead) bands such as Sledgehammer, Bull the Buffalos and Ikazuchi.

This is also one SSS band but this song is really good:
6M8TNuCwHtQ

I feel ashamed that I forgot The Stalin :blushing:

btw. there's also Finnish band The Stalin which was made by 4 13 years old boys. They have only one album, but they are really good.

Oh man, lots of great stuff guys. I'm really digging the Oi! especially. Thanks, knew I could count on the musical hive mind of the revolutionary left.

Nobody mentioned GISM?

Son, I am disappoint...

But Kontrrazvedka covered most of the other important japcore bands. This stuff, Japanese hardcore and dbeat used to be my shit when I was in high-school/high school aged.

I like Guitar Wolf. First heard of them through the movie Wild Zero and thought they were a fictional band, but they're real and dope.

Uf, I don't like GISM. Everybody likes them, but I just couldn't see what so good about them.

This is one of the best burning spirits bands. Of course, Chelsea was in it!

Melt Banana are fucking awesome. I was able to catch them live down in Malmö. It was fucking great. Hipster don't know how to fucking mosh though so I had to start up the moshpit. Couldn't have been happier.

Oh and since someone mentioned ska:
