Stuff like this really interests me and I love to read about it. The fact that the CIA, FBI, our own government, whatever...has approved and planned things like this should be alarming, but most people don't care. In my mind, I think, if they've done stuff like this in the past...why the hell wouldn't they do it now, or in the future?

Is there anything else that's worth reading about? Maybe my two examples gives you a good idea of what I'd like to read and know more about. Covert, illegal operations that have been used to justify doing something terrible..stuff like that.

Thanks for any replies.. :p

Thanks! I'm adding all of these to my bookmarks so I can read all of them, and then I'll try to find more information. I usually use Wikipedia as a jumping-off point.

COINTELPRO was actually already on my next-to-read list! :p

Although not a CIA or government plot (although some have tried to assert this, that's treading into conspiracy-theories) this one is really fucking disturbing to imagine if it had succeeded.

The Business Plot: (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business_Plot) A group of businessmen in the 1930's tried, unsuccessfully, to convince General Butler to raise an army of 500,000 to overthrow the U.S government and install a fascist dictatorship.

Runner-up:
The Castro Assassination plot (http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/article/0,28804,2008962_2008964_2008953,00.html): A plot to assassinate Fidel Castro with the CIA Agent's favorite weapon of choice *drumroll* A seashell!

Three words: FEMA Death Camps. Look it up seriously. FEMA has all these random facilities in the middle of nowhere. The official program is called Rex 84, which is a plan for detaining large numbers of American citizens in the event of martial law. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_84 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rex_84)

Lol Glenn Beck over here...

I worked at one of the "FEMA death camps" for a while. Youtube the videos for the one at Ft. Dix New Jersey, which the conspiracy nuts like to claim is going to be a transport hub for when they start rounding people up. That's right, I worked there, know what I did there? I was a guard!! Know who I was guarding? American citizens!!

Know why? Because in a war prisoners are taken, and somebody has to guard those prisoners, and those people have to be trained on how to properly do that. So the army needs to build prison camps to train its soldiers.

Its not your government, they don't represent you, the covert operations aren't always illegal, and they certainly don't justify anything. Having said that, if you're interested in Europe, look at Lobster magazine, Notes from the Borderland magazine and the biggest operation is probably http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Gladio

Serious business.

The topic creator is asking legitimate questions here. If you just came in here to make fun of him or stifle the discussion, you need to stop.

Do it again, and you'll be infracted.

quote from Engel *snipped*

This is spam. You can't just quote another user, one being warned themself, and then make that your entire post. Do it again and it's an infraction for you!

In conclusion:

This is a place of Learning (funny how it's actually CALLED that), and he is asking legitimate questions about the US government and it's various intelligence branches. If you don't have anything constructive to add - DON'T POST! If you just want to make fun of Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, et al go to Chit Chat and make a thread there. It isn't appropriate in Learning though.

No more shit posts or trolling in here. As per the rules, offending posts will be trashed and any further result in infractions.

Looks like I have 15 topics to read about so far! :D and knowing the way that Wikipedia makes me search/browse, it'll lead me to 30 other topics just because it references them in the article I'm currently reading.

Thanks everyone, loving it. Kind of astonishing that so much stuff like this has gone on over time (to me --a newbie-- at least). Please, don't hesitate to post more. and thanks for the book recommendation Susurrus, I'll check it out.

Might wanna check all the provisions of the Patriot Act as well. Not sure if it's exactly what you're going for but it's worth a look. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Act
