So what do you all think. Is Russia trying to carve out its own imperial block, especially with this new defense of Syria and this alliance? I think this is the most Russian activity I've seen in a while. How will it affect the NATO power structure, and how can we stop the saber-rattling which is soon to come? This could be an important point in the anti-militarism movement in both the US and Russia.

Yes.

One must have to have in mind that Russia, while undoubtly being an imperialist country,is also a "semi-colony"(Lenin's term) because it practically depends on raw materials/resources exports to the West (and China now).Russia is also becoming increasinly incapable of keeping the pace with the West despite the Putinist demagoguery.
Also:the Russian economy is rather small, only a half of the Japanese one.And it isn't growing too well either.Just for comparison, the Soviet GDP was some 2/3 of the American one in 1990,and the CIS(pretty much the whole ex-USSR) nominal GDP today is less than 1/7 of the US one.

This is a response to aggressive NATO expansion. As much as I do not like imperialism, I can say that Russia's actions are justified due to recent aggression by the west, which even armed and encouraged Georgia to launch an attack Russian peacekeepers in S. Ossetia.
Russia is being paranoid, as it always has been. However, their paranoia is justified. Hell, I would be too if I were in their shoes.

So I think that's basically every country in some form of continental Union now (EU, EAU, AU, South American Union). Not sure how I feel about that.
