Communism explanation.

I don't know much about communism. If someone could give me a good explanation on how society works, that would be really helpful. I know it's about equality and workers rights, but it's hard to imagine how it works considering the only communist societies I hear of are Cambodia, Vietnam, Cuba, and the USSR. And they put communism in such a bad light. So help me out here, so I know what I'm talking about.
