Nobody believed Julio Artuz, a 15 year old New Jersey special education student, when he complained of being bullied (http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/celebrities-who-were-bullied-as-kids-2543747.html) by his teacher. So he caught the whole thing on tape. In footage captured in secret on his cellphone, Artuz is subjected to curses and berating from a man who's supposed to be a mentor.

Artuz's teacher says: "I will kick your [expletive] from here to kingdom come until I'm 80 years old."

"Don't threaten me," responds Artuz.

"What are you going to do? You gonna get a chopper and chop me?" asks his teacher as the rest of the class sits rubbernecking the heated argument.

What Jules did do was show his taped account to his parents and a local advocate of bullied students. After an NBC news affiliate in Philadelphia got hold of the footage (you can watch it here (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=12ckkel5m/EXP=1322757023/**http%3A//www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/133858078.html)), the school immediately took action, placing the teacher on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

"The actions depicted on the video do not reflect the mission or culture of our school," said Gloucester Counter Special Services Superintendent Michael Dicken in a statement. "Our school district takes all bullying, harassment, and intimidation allegations seriously...we do not tolerate it."

While schools may not tolerate that kind of abuse of power (http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/parents-bullying-their-kids-bullies-too-far-2555761.html), it takes a lot to make it stop. In a separate incident earlier this week, an Ohio special needs student (http://shine.yahoo.com/parenting/parents-bullying-their-kids-bullies-too-far-2555761.html) came forward with an account of long-term bullying from her two teachers. She actually had to attend school wired with a recording device to capture proof of her teachers calling her "dumb", "lazy" and overweight. Another shocking incident this month involved a high school basketball coach who was captured on cell phone video making deeply offensive, racist remarks about students while in school (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=14ianjbqi/EXP=1322757023/**http%3A//rivals.yahoo.com/highschool/blog/prep_rally/post/Coach-under-fire-for-racist-8220-future-welfar%3Furn=highschool-wp8603).

"Statistically about 1 to 2 percent of teachers are actually involved in bullying students," says Dr. Joel Haber, a clinical psychologist who runs the anti-bullying (http://shine.yahoo.com/anderson-cooper/warning-signs-your-child-is-being-bullied-2574093.html) website RespectU (http://us.lrd.yahoo.com/SIG=11camc7vg/EXP=1322757023/**http%3A//www.respectu.com/). "There needs to be a clear policy in schools not just for students bullying other students but for teachers as well. Teachers are humans too and this kind of thing does happen, so it needs to be managed early."

While more schools have introduced anti-bullying (http://shine.yahoo.com/back-to-school/how-to-bully-proof-your-teen-for-back-to-school-2536241.html) codes of conduct for students, teachers aren't always considered a threat.

It's a murky issue for many school administrators. Where's the bullying line when you're managing an unruly classroom? "Its blurry sure but you know when someone wants to make a kid feel bad, or when they're abusing their power as an authority figure," says Dr. Haber. "That's not the way a role model should be managing a student. "

A bullying teacher doesn't just threaten to knock a student's self-confidence, he can destroy a kid's confidence in his school. "Teachers are supposed to make students feel safe," Dr. Haber says. When school becomes a fearful environment because of a teacher, students suddenly think 'well who can I trust then?'"

In Artuz' case, his phone was best bet. It's possible nobody would have listened if they didn't see it firsthand. "When you watch a video like that live, it really creates a different image than if you were to just hear about," says Dr. Haber.

It's a powerful defense, especially for students who don't feel their complaints would be recognized otherwise. It also sends a message to teachers: watch how you speak to your students, someone might be taping you.

I wasn't aware of any teachers calling students names (apart from silly stuff that rhymed with their name or something and also some teachers thought it was funny to get your name wrong on purpose which can be quite insulting and provoke further problems from other kids) or threatening physical violence when I was at school. However, there was some lesser stuff which was still totally uncalled for. Including throwing students out of lessons virtually immediately after they had started for what I can only assume was a personal dislike or the chance the particular student might cause a problem or difficulty later in the lesson - usually by that great infraction of 'talking when you're not supposed to'.

Sometimes teachers sort of got involved with picking on kids that were generally picked on or made fun of in lessons. And just in general a lot of teachers made a lot of kids feel like shit or useless or both from time to time. Probably teaches don't even realise they're doing it or simply think it's ok. I rarely if ever came across a 'fair' teacher, one that had respect and got respect back but they do exist. Though in my experience are the minority. Teaching is no longer an art in any sense it's just another form of wage-labour and I'm afraid this is reflected in the attitudes and practices of modern day teaching and education. I can only imagine that it will get worse and worse. At least in the main we don't have to endure being hit at school by teachers anymore. Maybe some other memories will coming flooding back at some point. I went to a rather conservative school though, for instance I nearly got thrown out for swearing at a teacher, I told her to "piss off" - honestly can't remember why. I ended up with a Saturday detention for my troubles. I think I had another one for saying "Yid Army" to a Spurs fan a few times who grassed me up for it. At the time I had absolutely no idea what it meant, just thought that was what Spurs (English football team with many Jewish supporters) were known as. What's annoying is that the guy didn't say stop it or explain at the time, if he had had a problem with it I'm sure I would have shut up and apologised.

I went through a similar incident but it was more over her blatant racism and fucking negative attitude. I ended up leaving the school but not before I recorded her. When I got to my new school I sent in the tape.

Needless to say, I got her ass fired.

This bloke must have some serious issues, but it is good to see the authorities doing something for once
