Is support for The Labour Party, the trade unions and voting in elections an effective way forward for the working class today?

Over 90 years ago, communists who called for workers' councils in Britain and argued against such ‘tactics’ were a target of Lenin’s infamous polemic, Left Wing Communism, An Infantile Disorder, which singled out for criticism two of their best known representatives – Sylvia Pankhurst and William Gallacher.

Mark Hayes, author of The British Communist Left, re-visits the people, politics and arguments of that time and evaluates their relevance for today’s struggles against austerity and war.

Talk organised by the Kent Communist Group, followed by discussion. All Welcome!

The meeting is organised by the Kent Communist Group which describes itself thus:


"The Kent Communist Group is an organization of revolutionary communists, from both Marxist and Anarchist traditions. We seek to provide a platform for cooperation and debate between revolutionary communists. We are not a specific political organization but provide points of common agreement as the basis of revolutionary cooperation.

These Points of agreement are:

- Global Revolution for the overthrow of capitalism.
- Proletarian Internationalism and Opposition to Nationalism of all kinds.
- Opposition to Stalinism and State Capitalism.

As an organization seeking to facilitate cooperation between communists of different traditions & tendencies, we seek to provide activities that are practical and activities that are more theoretical and further our understanding of communism – its history and ideas."


The book 'The Communist Left in Britain', on which the kick-off presentation will be based, was originally published a decade ago by the International Communist Current, a left communist organisation, though it was not written by one of its members.
