In the third part of Lord of the rings (The Return of the King), Aragorn says to Eomer:

You're no Niggard.

Is this the hideous racism I think it is? Because if so... :crying:

Probably not intentionally. I haven't read anything Middle earth related in years, but I think there are a whole bunch of questionable elements in his novels and world. (This does not stop them from being awesome works of fiction though)

Lord of the Rings is so racist that Stormfront have their own section dedicated to it.

I'm serious, if you don't believe me go check it out.

As opposed to the socialist search engines that proliferate over the internet?

Racism is a staple of most fantasy novels and worlds. Most of the heroes are white straight dudes with a token minority. (Look at how Tolkien describes orcs -- they sound familiar to bad Asian stereotypes) I'm not saying it's ok, but it's a fact that the genre(especially anything pre-2000) features bullshit bigoted stereotypes.

The etymology is not precisely known, but it's certainly unrelated to the racial epithet, which it predates by a couple centuries. It is most likely borrowed from one of the Germanic languages, like the Old Norse word for stingy, hnøgger.

It should be noted the Tolkien was an ultra-Catholic who, while later voicing some opposition to Hitler and the Nazi Party, supported Franco during the Civil War because he was upset that some left Republicans were anti-religious.

I'm aware that lotR is very racist- what with the "Haradrim" and the "Easterlings", but I never knew it was that bad. It's a real shame, because I really enjoy those books. :(

It still amazes me that every few months a thread like this pops up discussing the *shocking* racist undertones in fantasy.

The fantasy genre is generally just race wars + magic.
