View Full Version : What do you avoid eating for health reasons?

So what do you avoid eating?
In short, I try to have low glycemic load meals, low sodium (and high potassium), and sparingly consume fructose (or the disaccharide sucrose).
General diet plan: calorie restriction (around 1200 kcal per day) with multavitamin + fish oil supplementation
Here's is my fastidious criterion for evaluating the nutrient value of a food:
1. high protein content per calorie (sometimes I just add a half scoop (~8 grams of protein) of Muscle Milk to some breakfast cereal. (It helps me bench my 250 lbs :blushing:;)). Since I don't eat that much calories, I need to make sure I have adequate protein.
2. refined carbohydrates, except for breakfast where I eat about a half cup to a cup of cereal (Kashi Go Lean) with almond milk. Notable exception, 8 oz of sweet potatoes once/twice per week. Purpose is to lower glycemic load of a meal, although I have some carbohydrates for breakfast to break my body's catabolic gluconeogenesis where it is using amino acids to produce glucose.
3. low sodium to potassium ratio. (K+ promotes natriuresis [literally meaning pissing sodium]; sodium increases blood pressure)
4. fructose (see Robert Lustig's presentation and papers; the biochemistry is fun). I only avoid added sugars, although I permit myself to eat a moderate amount of fruits and vegetables like carrots.
My interpretation of Lustig's articles is that what metabolic matters is flux of fructose, since the liver is overwhelmed by an excessive amount of substrate (the liver is the only organ that can metabolize fructose with the exception of sperm for males). For instance, a few grams of fructose would be converted to glucose and exported during a fast, while a copious amount of fructose would induce the activation (by dephosphorylation by protein phosphatase 2) of ChREBP (carbohydrate response element binding protein), a transcription factor for the enzymes of de novo lipogenesis (e.g. malic enzyme, acetyl-CoA carboxylase, fatty acid synthase, ATP-citrate lyase) . Too much fructose increases glycolysis intermediates, resulting in too much acetyl-CoA to be shuttled into the citric acid cycle. Acetyl-CoA becomes the bricolage for de novo lipogenesis.
Fructose-1-phosphate induces JNK kinase expression, which serine phosphorylates the IRS protein (insulin response substrate) which inactivates them (I don't know how, it may prevent the SH2 domain of the Grb protein from recognizing phosphorylated tyrosine residues or prevent tyrosine phosphorylation by the insulin receptor), causing insulin resistance.
Frequency of sugar ingestion is more important in the dental context.

Had some fun writing the bit on fructose. I still have my aptitude of recollecting biochemical pathways that I had during college. :)

I avoid canned goods and animal products. The former are full of so many different preservatives that they keep for years even when wet. The latter aren't necessary, and contain cholesterol, too much protein, and shit-tons of fat.

I used to eat a lot of playdough and glue. I now only indulge on occasion and have substituted them with copious amounts of fried chicken and pizza.

I eat chicken breasts, eggs (about 3 a week), non-fat Greek yogurt, Kashi cereal, Muscle Milk (mixed with cereal or my cocoa) for my protein. I get about 40-60 grams a day.
Nuts, cheese, and vegetables are a minor source.
Most of my sources of protein are derived from animal products with the exception of vegetables and cereal.
I don't know if dietary cholesterol raises serum cholesterol. Some studies demonstrates that it doesn't, probably because the presence of excess cholesterol prevents the cleavage and translocation of endoplasmic reticulum SREBP2 (steroid response element binding protein), a transcription factor of the rate-limiting enzyme of the mevalonate pathway, HMG-CoA reductase, to the nucleus. However, the inverse promotes lower serum cholesterol: phytosterols, which interfere with the absorption of dietary lower LDL levels, since it reduces intracellular cholesterol, which upregulates the expression of the LDL receptor, facilitating increased clearance of serum cholesterol.
Furthermore, eggs may increase LDL-A, which is relatively innocuous, relative to LDL-B (the small dense, causes arteriosclerosis)

Soda, I say this, even though I am fiend for Coca-Cola. :(
I do quit drinking soda about 3 weeks before I have a match so I can make weight easier. So I guess that is a start. Dammit, even thinking about Coca-Cola makes me want to go buy some. I don't even enjoy it that much when I drink it, but I just like it. If that makes sense.
Honestly, avoid fried foods, greasy foods, and don't eat too much bread.

I keep my all natural homegrown condom bush in my window together with the rest of my fresh herbs.
I usually drink 1 or 2 beers and eat chips and candy everyday, but I always eat varied food (as far as thats possible on a shitty student budget) and lots of fish.
As long as you get all the nutrients you need and move enough to burn the calories you eat I don't think it matters all that much if you eat some bad things.

I don't avoid eating anything because my mother buys all of my food and beggars, it seems, cannot be choosers. I can't apply for food-stamps yet, due to some arbitrary age rule despite being old enough to vote. :cursing:

Nothing really. I've been fairly healthy most of my life. And it appears I will stay that way. Hopefully.

Although, I do avoid vegetables with a passion. And tomatoes, if you wanna get picky about fruits. :D

I second this. If I don't get a minimum of 3000 cal/day I shut down, develop headaches, and lose any energy.

I don't avoid anything except for all that stuff I don't like. Like cheese, hot dogs, guacamole, pasta of any kind, and the list goes on. After thinking about it I avoid a lot of food because I'm a "picky eater" supposedly. I just don't like what most people like and do like what most people hate, it's not my fault society is all backwards!

There's no way you eat 1200kcal per day and bench 250lbs, whatever that is in kg...like 115 or so. It's unlikely, anyway. Or at least unhealthy and unnecessary!
I eat a balanced diet. I try not to eat too much red meat, on average have 300-400g per week. Also try not to use too much oil when I cook. I absolutely refuse to countenance eating butter/margarine (aside from if its in a cake, but that's rare). I also keep my consumption of crisps/biscuits/chocolate as low as possible, and have tried to limit takeaway meals to around 1 per week.

I used a lower end estimate. I usually do about 1200-1400. with the median and mean around 1300. I up my intake for two weeks if I see my body weight drop. I try to maintain my BMI in the low 18s.

Hard to avoid eating certain foods, especially as a Uni student..LOL always in a budget. I can't even afford a Mc Donalds (although i would never eat there)...I generally eat in the streets...Not very healthy, especially the oil used in fried food (1 month old). Although now near my uni some street vendors have began to sell healthier food.

The human body is 70% water (~65% oxygen, ~10% hydrogen). When you eat food low in water content, your body must use its own water reserves to process it. Fruits and vegetables are over 80% water, which helps to keep your body hydrated during digestion. This is one simple reason fruits and vegetables are the healthiest type of foods. Because of food combining I split these up into two separate meals:
Breakfast: raw fruits (e.g apples, bananas, tangerines, raisins, etc)
Dinner: vegetables (as well as whole grains some cooked some non-cooked)
This formula defines the majority of my diet. I eat small portions of raw fruits, nuts, and miscellaneous other things as snacks.

Meat (for health but mainly other reasons), limit dairy (hope to be able to be fully vegan someday soon), caffeine, greasy foods in general. Right now my dietary concerns are less about avoiding unhealthy foods than they are about trying to obtain nutritiou$ food. :(

Before a fight I used to eat lots of vegetables and Fruits. Stay away from the shit foods like fast foods. A good lean meat is also great for building muscle whilst not getting the fats.

I am trying to quite soda to improve my dental health, I went for 2 months only water, juice, coffee, tea, and assorted alcoholic products. Then I decided to have just one can of coke, and it went down hill from there.

My doctor put me on a low-sodium, no-pork diet last September because of my blood pressure. After that I started taking my health more serious. Now I only eat when I'm hungry, and I'm careful about not over-doing it. Having to avoid salt means having to avoid processed and preserved foods, so in general my diet is much fresher than it used to be. At the moment I'm looking into Gary Taubes' idea about carbohydrates and insulin; he sees the overconsumption of carbs and sugar as the common link between diabetes, obesity, etc. I still start my mornings with a big bowl of Cheerios and fruit, though..

I gave up Soda for lent. I generally try to stay away from it. If I can avoid obvious junk foods, I can, except for party events. I buy nothing with too many sugars, saturated fats, or too much sodium; those are the big ones in terms of contributors to health problems in the modern food industry.

We are constantly told that we should eat healthy food, even though many of us have no idea why. We have this vague idea that it will help us stay healthy, but it is not clear to what extent. There are actually many reasons why you want to eat healthy, the benefits will affect many areas of your life. Learning to eat healthy is important if you are going to be on your best, fortunately, it's not hard to do.
The most important reason that a healthy diet is important is that this will help you avoid diseases. There are all kinds of serious diseases associated with the image of what we eat, the most common of these are heart disease and diabetes. In addition, several types of cancer are caused by poor diet is. This is actually an exaggeration to say that the main cause of early death is a poor diet. Obviously, this gives a good excuse to eat healthy food.
Another big reason that you want to eat healthy foods that will help you keep your weight under control. One of the reasons that you want to do that being overweight is the cause of many diseases. However, for most people the main reason they want to control your weight to look good. People spend hours in the gym in an attempt to lose weight, a much more efficient approach is to watch what you eat. The diet is much more important when it comes to weight loss than exercise.
The last reason that you should try to eat healthy, it will give you more energy. When you eat a diet that is unhealthy, you will see that during the day goes on you start to feel tired by the end of the day you actually drag and drop. This can be easily overcome by making an effort to improve the way that you eat.</span>
