View Full Version : Ending an Argument

I've essentially been in an argument with some people on another forum trying to explain, with examples such as FaSinPat in Argentina, about why it isn't necessary for the workplace to have managers and a top-to-bottom heirarchy where a few profit off the hard work of the many. A couple of them understand where I am coming from although believe I have a naive or utopian view of life and a couple of them simply can't comprehend any system without a boss ordering workers about.
Simply put, I have explained my piece and now want to bow out of the argument without feeling like I'm running away. These are pretty moderate/right folks who haven't been rude about my opinions but very much are dismissive about it. I would normally take it much further but... at the end of the day it's just a forum about manga and I don't want to be dragged into heavy political discussion yet on the other hand I don't want it to appear as if I've given up and conceeded.
Any thoughts?

Just point out it's a forum about manga and that you don't want to be dragged into heavy political discussion.
invite them to continue it over PM. Chances are they won't.

'God, I'm not debating with someone who likes Naruto. That's just below me.'
On a more serious note, you can just say that you think that you've explained your part and put forward your position sufficiently enough for others to judge it on its own merits, and don't think that further debate will do anything other than simply illustrate disagreements. You can end with a link to this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQFKtI6gn9Y) Monty Python sketch.

Never stop until they are all wearing red underpants. You cannot sleep until you have converted everyone , because people are wrong on the internet and this must be stopped.

Don't worry too much about how they view things. I have found myself in plenty of internet arguments and I know you cannot let them goad you into continuing. Just say that you said your bit and you are done. If they are reasonable, they will understand that you are not running away, but don't have an interest in continuing. They are unreasonable, then there is really no sense in continuing on. Let them claim victory, there are some people who will no matter how much time you put into it.

As long as they don't have house rules against it and/or members liable to follow you around and bug you about it, why not just stop replying?

Clarify what's meant by "it isn't necessary for the workplace to have managers and a top-to-bottom heirarchy where a few profit off the hard work of the many." Does this mean you need to generate only a single example? The strict definition of necessary means having a top-down hierarchy is required in literally every case. If you can get them to accept this then your claim is pretty easy to prove.

I tried converting people to socialism on Ron Paul forum. It is a lost cause:crying:

People just arent naturally inclined to change their position on an issue in the face of facts and evidence. People will more often change their opinon when their social condition changes. For example, a socialist may adopt capitalist views if they become rich, and vice versa.

Better invite them to a different forum as been suggested. I've got banned from plenty of forums for getting into furious political arguments. Annoying as fuck...
