I was wondering, does anyone know more about the link between food and class? How it relates to food related illnesses/diseases and poverty? I am genuinely interested, any recommended resources are much appreciated!

Well it depends on what kind of food is in access of working class. In third world people have no food so they die of famine and in the first world working class buys cheep food full of hormons which is bad for their health. The most expansive food is allways "bio" and you need money to buy it and time to prepare it.

A lot of the working class people that I've met almost always ate shitty food because they didn't have enough money to spend on a better diet, since they had to spend a lot of their monthly income on rent and gas/bus passes, and all that stuff. A lot of them just don't have the means to afford food that isn't filled with ludicrous amounts of shit. It's sad though, since nutrition is a very important factor in everyday life, and a lot of people just don't get adequate nutrition, which leads to health problems and other stuff.

That's true, but even with attempts to create alternatives, we haven't been successful. We tried organizing a community garden here in Ontario for lower income communities, but our so called "progressive" regional representative demanded us to stop.
Occupy the food system!

I'm reminded of that scene in Woody Allen's "Love & Death" where the army captain gives a speech to his troops and warns about the consequences of losing to the French: "Do you want to have to eat all of that rich French food?"

This is one factor mentioned in my sociology unit for my A levels that leads to problems in school (and work) for a lot of the working class. Poor diet can make you ill, unfit, low on energy and just overall add to the feeling of being "poor" (often leading to a self-fulfilling prophecy of "I'm poor, this is just how it is and I have to accept it" which kills motivation). If you're always ill you're gonna miss school/work which obviously means you're missing out on a lot, if you're low on energy it can and will affect your performance/concentration at school/work, and if you don't have free healthcare then going to see a doctor all the time due to illness/health problems isn't going to be fun.
