Live!
or Rastaman Vibration

you decide

or "songs of freedom" if you've got a fat wallet.
My personal favorite album might be rastaman vibration, that or maybe exodus. I can't get enough of the song "Natural Mystic"

I just listened to Bob again yesterday and am re-realizing what a great artist he was. I put 5 albums in my car to listen too.

Natural Mystic is great, especially when he did it live in Pittsburg

"They say experience teaches wisdom,
but there's a natural mystic flowin' through the air!"

"if you listen carefully now you will hear"

Do you mean his last concert, the one in pittsburg? I guess the live one is on songs of freedom? I haven't come across it yet.

Rastafari
10th November 2003, 22:38
yeah, his last concert. There is a CD of it floating around somewhere that I have to track down. It has the Best Zion Train ever. Its not on Songs of Freedom, unfortunately.

and, as unclimactic as it is, I just found out that "Redemption Song" was his 2nd to last song he did live.
The last one, while not as meaningful, was the awesome "Work."

Rastafari
10th November 2003, 22:41
wow. I just remembered the day I got "Songs of Freedom." I had gotten my ACT back and gotten a 29. My mom had promised me something under the table if I got a 30, so she broke down and got me this. For four days, I listened to it straight. I ate, slept, and listened to it.
It was a hell of a lot more mind-opening than Legend!

Mr Mojo Risin
10th November 2003, 22:51
well, that's one cd per day, i guess. I would spend all my time listening to mister brown, that's one reason I wish I had songs of freedom.

Rastafari
10th November 2003, 22:54
good call. I did listen to it quite a bit. I just heard the original Vampire (not the Dracula Dub) by Tosh and its nowhere near as good as the dub.

Man I thought the last song he wrote was Screwface

Rastafari
11th November 2003, 02:24
nah, Screwface was a lot earlier, I think

thats a good question, though. I'd say probably something on Confrontation. Hard to say, though

Is Songs of Freedom that little 4 cs box ? I used to have it, but it got stolen. There was some awesome stuff on there.

Rasta, why would you care if he downloaded stuff ? A very small fraction goes to his wife (who, after he died, really disgraced the Marley name) the rest goes to some shitty record company.

Download download download.

this is true. Island just fucks artists over anyway

This sounds like a good question for Ciki. I'd suggest tipping him off to the existance of the thread, but he'll probably weigh in sooner or later. I think all would acknowledge he's the resident reggae expert around here.

Mr Mojo Risin
11th November 2003, 05:56
yeah, island is up to no good, they are currently in a lawsuit with family man barrett, i believe. What a shame, and chris blackwell always seemed like such a nice man..

Bob Marley is an international hero.
Naturally, I recommend one of the albums he did with the Wailers, specifically Soul Revolution. But that probably wouldn't appeal to you too much, I think Exodus would be a good choice for an introduction to reggae and Bob, from a pop music perspective.

But Catch a Fire was the greatest album they did on Tuff Gong/Island.

Catch a Fire was the first reggae album I ever owned. Get that.

come on Praxis, don't make me blush.

Well, if Peter Tosh or Yellow Man were here, I'd defer to them. Since they're not, I figure'd it'd be best to ask you about this. jk

Screwface was released in 1972, Hampton.

My first Bob Marley album was "One Love"... and then I started to buy them in chronological order. I think this is ok as well.

See, what'd I tell you?

Mano Dayak

???

Mr Mojo Risin

chronological order is, in my opinion, the best way to listen for the full experience. that way, you can hear the progression of the artist's music and experience it as you would have if the artist was just starting out today.

Mano Dayak

Buying up discs in chronological order is what I do with every artist I discover because I completely agree with you... fortunately, Bob Marley is easy to find...

If you want to listen to his career going down the toilet. The years 1969 through to 1973 were the apex of Bob's career, in my never-humble opinion.
Lee Perry made the Wailers the harmony group they were. Then the egos came into play and everything went pear shaped.

As I tried to illustrate before: Canikickit is the god of all that which comes from "the islands." And Ciki blushed before :redstar2000:

Mr Mojo Risin

i agree with you, scratch with the wailers led to some nice harmonies (slave driver, notably, has good harmonies), but scratch's influence didn't end when they split. And I think it is quite brash to set a date and say that anything past that date is garbage.

Rastafari
15th November 2003, 02:19
agreed. I have Nice Time and Hypocrites on a 45 i Just remembered. its awesome :)

But Mr. Brown > life itself

While I do agree that the apex of his career was the early 70's, I disagree that he went down the toilet.

Survivor is one of my favorite albums ever in the history of music.

Survivor is one of my favorite albums ever in the history of music.

Can't argue there; it's one of my favorite albums of all time as well.

edit: I wish they would have put "One Dub" on there though-I listened to that the other day and am still thinking about it

Mr Mojo Risin
17th November 2003, 03:53
survivor's a good one, i think.
How many of you have heard the "Deluxe" edition of Catch A Fire, with the unreleased versions of the album including "High Tide Or Low Tide" and "ALL DAY ALL NIGHT." I think it is very interesting to hear the differences, you can definitely tell how the record folks changed the wailer's stuff.

Thanks. I've got about a dozen cd's now, most compilations. Now I'm trying to expand. I like the sort of reggae on the legend cd. What sort of reggae is that? Who else would I like?

Definately Exodus, followed closely by the Jamacian release version of Catch A Fire.

K i'm like a hugggeeee bob marley fan, so lemme recommend the following :

Exodus - Probably for the best description of what his music was like. It ranges from powerful political songs like 'The Heathen' and 'Exodus' all the way to love songs for his girlfriend in London, Ms. Breakspeare, entitled 'Turn your lights down low'.

Catch a Fire - first Wailers album internationally released. If you're lucky, grab the LP with the original Zippo lighter case. Friggin awesome! Nah, but the re-released Catch a Fire's got 2 bonus songs, High tide or low tide, and All day All night.

Uprising and Survival - For the more politically in-depth.

Kaya - more relaxing

Confrontation - The album art will just have you amazed alone. Lol. As well as tracks like 'Black man redemption'.

Bob Marley will always rock.
